First picture in the new Reader

  • Unknown's avatar

How do we get the first picture/photograph in our post to show up first in the New Reader rather than the last?
    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I agree. I choose a particular picture for specific reasons. Also, why is a video chosen over the first picture when the post appears in Reader?

I would like some control over these things.

You’re right. It used to come in as we set it up. Now it doesn’t. Big disappointment. If there is a way to adjust this I’d like to know.

WP have been playing. With my blog, and probably yours, the Reader features the first picture, for the post, found in your media library (i.e the most recently uploaded). aaaaargh

And, if the picture happens to be later in the post, nothing before that picture appears in the Reader’s new image gallery. double aaargh :-)

Therefore, make sure that you upload pictures in the reverse order of use in the post (i.e. first in post, last to upload).

Video tends to usurp pictures (have done for along time). But, a gallery of one picture will appear first (at least it used to).

    Best of Luck

Thank you. I’ll do that next post.

The Reader has had some changes recently, and there are still some ongoing updates.

In the future, setting a featured image should override the video as the Reader featured image, but that change hasn’t gotten in just yet. It’s coming soon though!

And, if the picture happens to be later in the post, nothing before that picture appears in the Reader’s new image gallery. double aaargh :-)

I tried to test this on a couple different posts but couldn’t make that problem happen. In my tests, all of the pictures I added to my posts appeared in the Reader’s image gallery.

    Hi,
But how do I get the first picture to show up first in the Reader?
As I look through my feed now, none of the first photograph shows up first. In the last post the photograph that shows in the Reader first, isn’t first or last uploaded as grahaminhats suggested. Is there a way to make the main photo first?
    Thanks.

There isn’t a way to right now, but it’s going to be updated soon. I know it’s a bit in flux which is why I haven’t documented it more clearly in the related support doc, but it’s something I’m planning to do as soon as I can.

If you start the habit now to set a featured image, that should begin working as the Reader-featured image more reliably in the near future. I don’t have an exact time frame I can give you, but I can tell you it’s being worked on!

    Okay. Thank you for answering.

    1. Try this:-
    https://wordpress.com/read/blog/feed/21634849
Then scroll down the “Wheels on Fire” and try viewing the Reader’s image gallery.

    2. The workaround works for me. Perhaps it is theme dependent.

    3. I don’ want to use a featured image. Just render it as shown on my post. Who gave you the right to effectively edit my post in the way that it appears.

I checked the “Wheels on Fire” post and I could see the first few thumbnails at https://wordpress.com/read/blog/feed/21634849 which is how it is designed to work, and I could see all of the images in a horizontal scroll by clicking on “View Gallery” for that post from the https://wordpress.com/read/blog/feed/21634849 link. After my testing, I believe the Reader galleries are working as expected.

    @designsimply

    Works this morning. Didn’t before.

  • Unknown's avatar

Mine’s not. I don’t what a “featured image” is. I just want to see the first photograph, first, as it was before.
    Thanks.

Checked the Reader today and found that my blog post from yesterday has no picture at all. I thought you fixed this issue already.

In this screenshot, the first listed is from a blog that reposts everything that I post (it also has no picture so that change is good), then my blog post without a picture: https://www.flickr.com/photos/lorri37/20032314606/

Also noticed no global tag (WP used to list several tags years ago). Tags were a great way to find new blogs to follow with similar interests.

So I scrolled down and found a blog post I made last week and it does have the picture showing.

Why would one post show a picture and the other blog post not show the picture?

  • Unknown's avatar

I can help take a look! Let me see what I can find out after some testing. In https://www.flickr.com/photos/lorri37/20032314606/ it doesn’t show the URL but it looks like it’s this blog https://dandelionsalad.wordpress.com/ and that the summary feed setting is turned on.

First, for reference, this is the post in question:
    https://dandelionsalad.wordpress.com/2015/07/26/richard-d-wolff-im-becoming-a-fan-of-pope-francis-capitalism-runs-counter-to-the-plan-of-jesus/

That contains one image which has dimensions of 320 x 247 pixels. In this case, the image is too small. Currently, for an image to show up in the Reader, it must be at least 350 pixels wide.

Also noticed no global tag (WP used to list several tags years ago). Tags were a great way to find new blogs to follow with similar interests.

Tags are still there for full text feeds. You are using a summary feed and those do not contain tag links. Summary feeds really do contain less data, and some decisions are still being worked out for how much information can and should be pulled for those types of feeds compared to full text feeds. Feedback on it goes both ways, so we’re going to watch stats and keep updating based on what we find works out best for readers.

Full text feeds are the better choice if you want readers to have the best experience of your posts within the Reader.

Thanks for getting back so quickly, designsimply.

Where does it say that the picture has to be a certain size or larger? I usually do post a larger sized picture so if I change the size of the picture will it automatically show the new larger picture in the Reader?

I received one view from Reader yesterday and one view today, so I am not going to change from summary to full text as I don’t receive many if any views from Reader.

About the tags, my email notice for subscribing to my blog sends out all tags used for the post, just like before the Reader existed.

Such a shame that some blogs are being prioritized over other blogs simply because of a feed setting.

The size requirement for Reader-featured images has been adjusted a few times, so it’s not documented yet. It will be once all the details get sorted though. There are probably still some updates that will happen for how images are selected.
