First picture in the new Reader

    Thanks, designsimply.

    What about this question: if I change the size of the picture will it automatically show the new larger picture in the Reader?

    I really feel that blogs that use the summary instead of full text are second-class blogs now.

    It should be all blog posts show a picture (if they have one) or none of the blogs show a picture.

    @designsimply

    Indeed. It seems that because we refuse to provide our full post content in the Reader (wordpress.COM magazine),.and choose to compel visitors to read full posts where they were actually published ie. on our blogs, so our blogs get the page view stats they deserve, and so those using the Reader get to view our actual themes on our blogs, and perhaps even click additional links to posts and pages n our blogs, we are being treated as second class bloggers, and that SUCKS!

    Heads up! This is more material for my improv comedy skits. Theme: Retiring to a rice paddy somewhere in a third world country, throwing away my toothbrush, and ruling the internet with a smartphone, as wordpress.com Staff bow down to kiss my _________ feet.

    I have not tested that myself, but I believe it should work based on other similar tests I have done in the past. Try it!

    It should be all blog posts show a picture (if they have one) or none of the blogs show a picture.

    A picture must meet the minimum size requirement, regardless of the summary setting.

    @timethief, the summary feed option is an intentional choice you make to limit the data your blog offers in its feed. You have the choice to go one way or the other. If you don’t want to offer access to the full text posts from your blog, then there is still a very nice summary view of it in the Reader right now (and updates were even made to get rid of the intermediary view so that clicking goes straight through to the blog, per user feedback! not only that, dandelionsalad’s complaint is about image size, which works the same for both summary and full text). If you still prefer the summary feed setting and don’t think the full text feed setting will help you, then that’s okay and getting visitors in other ways is where you will want to focus. Keep in mind the Reader on WordPress.com is one option of many for readers out there. We hope that readers will enjoy the WordPress.com Reader and stick around because of it.

    Getting back to the original poster’s concern:

    @needhamb

    How do we get the first picture/photograph in our post to show up first in the New Reader rather than the last?

    An update was made, and this should be working better now. It may not always get the first image perfectly for every post every time, but now it will try to grab the first image after the featured image (if one has been set).

    Do you your mothers know your out.

    Thanks for answering and working hard to find out what changed. One more question on this. Is “setting a featured image” on every blog design? If it is then I’m really dense, I just don’t see it. I just put a photograph first then the text then more photographs.
    Thanks again.

    I believe it should always be possible to set a featured image, but not every theme uses them in the theme design on the front end.

    Thanks again, designsimply, I changed the size of the picture in the latest blog post, and it is now showing up in the Reader.

    When did this change occur with having a minimum size requirement? And how were we supposed to know this size?

    I think you missed my point when I said, “It should be all blog posts show a picture (if they have one) or none of the blogs show a picture.”

    It’s about consistency and fairness. No second-class blogs. Either the Reader shows pictures, or doesn’t show pictures.

    Having such a large size picture requirement is not the way to go about it. And not telling us what that size requirement is, is not a good idea either.

    I will work to get the support document updated regarding the size requirement.

  • Unknown's avatar

    That is not the best way to let bloggers know of changes. The support document could have been updated and I wouldn’t have known because I have been blogging here for 8 years, why would I look up a support document?

    I thought that reblog posts will not have a picture shown on the Reader. Just posted a new blog post and the blog that always reblogs my posts shows the picture used in the Reader.

    I do have one good thing to say about the changes on the global tags, they are going back further than 2 to 4 months which is very nice. Not as good as it used to be before the Reader, but definitely better.

    The first photograph came out first this time, and I’ve noticed it it did on others too. Thank you.
