Five posts and hours of work, GONE.

I just want to say that while I Iove how simple and easy to use WordPress is, I’ve lost about five articles now because they were “invalid” when tried to publish them or because clicking the wrong tab or button instantly erases everything in the “new post” box. Why does this happen?

When I fill out forms on other websites, or when posting a status on Facebook even, if I try to leave the page before submitting, a box will pop up and say “WAIT! ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO DO THAT?”

Why doesn’t WordPress have this feature? It seems so simple! Is there something in the settings I don’t have right? If so, why isn’t that safety measure there by default?

I’m a new WordPress user, and I want to stay a WordPress user, but this is truly infuriating and I don’t know if I can take much more of my time and work being flushed away for no apparent reason.

    Hey there,

If you compose your post via your blog’s dashboard, they should be auto-saved as drafts every few minutes. If this isn’t happening, please let me know.

If you compose your post via the “New Post” feature on WordPress.com, however, your posts will not automatically be saved as drafts. This is a known shortcoming, and something we are looking to improve in the future.

As for the “invalid” error you’ve received, we place a limit (in my tests, about 45 minutes) on the amount of time one can spend editing a form, for security reasons. The safest way to avoid a problem with this is to interact with the page occasionally–save the post as a draft, then continue editing. This will also prevent the blog post from becoming accidentally lost.

I’ve also forwarded your suggestion of an “Are you sure you want to do that?” prompt when leaving a page on for consideration in a future WordPress version.

Please let me know if I can be of any further help.

    Best,
    P.
