Fixing a translation

I have used the google translate work-around (for Spanish), and it’s (my Google Translate link is called “En Espanol”).

However, there are some words that are not translated properly. For example, “Power” is translated as “Energia” when it would be better translated as “Poder”. This type of thing changes the meaning a bit and makes it appear to be incorrect to native Spanish speakers.

The google Translate plug in is stated as having the functionality for someone to click on a word and change the translation (*). I pasted their instructions below:
    “To tweak a translation:
1.Hover over a translated sentence to display the original text
2.Click on ‘Contribute a better translation’
3.And finally, click on a phrase to choose an automatic alternative translation — or just double-click to edit the translation directly.
For example, if you’re translating your site into Spanish, and you want to translate Cat not to gato but to Cat, you can tweak it as follows: [image of google translate popup with original and translated text]
If you’re signed in, the corrections made on your site will go live right away — the next time a visitor translates a page on your website, they’ll see your correction. If one of your visitors contributes a better translation, the suggestion will wait until you approve it. You can also invite other editors to make corrections and add translation glossary entries. You can learn more about these new features in the Help Center. “

    Here is my problem:
I see the popup and the contribute button. BUT WHEN I MAKE A CHANGE TO THE TRANSLATION AND CLICK CONTRIBUTE, NOTHING CHANGES.

Is this functionality stripped out because WordPress.com cannot support plug-ins? Or is this possible, and I’m just missing something?

    Please let me know.
    Thanks!
    Marissa

    Hi Marissa,

In order for the suggested translation to show up, the site needs to be using Google’s Website Translator plugin and customization meta tag, as stated on their blog:

    To get started:
    1. Add the Website Translator plugin and customization meta tag to your website
    2. Then translate a page into one of 60+ languages using the Website Translator

Since WordPress.com currently does not support neither of those, your suggestions are fed into Google’s translation AI (Artificial Intelligence) but not instantly reflected on your site.
    Sorry for the inconvenience.

Ok that is what I thought but I just wanted to be sure. Because it is a work-around and not the actual plug-in, we don’t get all the funcionality…

    Thanks!
    Marissa
