Fixing mistake in setting up multilingual blog according to Opetion 3

Hello! I’m in the process of trying to set up a multilingual blog (French and English). I tried to set up my two blogs according to Option 3 on the support page but I seem to have gone wrong somewhere.
I would like to use the domain name guthman.blog.fr (which I own) for the French site and guthman.wordpress.com for the English language site.
Ideally, I’d like people to be able to easily and initiatively switch from one to the other as described in Option 3.
I thought two blogs method outlined in Option 3 would be better because I want to be able to edit the text of both languages. I am going to try a machine assisted translation to start the English language blog but I am certain that whatever it produces will need extensive editing.
I seem to have screwed this up, however, since both address now go to the same site.
Can you offer some advise on how to organize this so that:
guthman.wordpress.com goes to the English language site
and
guthman.blog.fr goes to the French language site
and a way to allow readers to switch from one language to the other?

The blogs at guthman.wordpress.com and guthman.fr are actually the same site. The domain guthman.fr is actually just mapped to guthman.wordpress.com. This means that the domain displays whatever content is at guthman.wordpress.com. Does that make sense?
In order to create a separate English site, you’ll want to add another blog to your account following the instructions here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/create-a-blog/#adding-new-blog-to-an-existing-account
You’ll want to label this blog something like guthmanenglish.wordpress.com to distinguish it from the French site. Then, you’ll need to add all of your content in English to guthmanenglish.wordpress.com.
At that point, we’ll have the following:
– guthman.wordpress.com (and domain guthman.fr) displaying your French content
– guthmanenglish.wordpress.com displaying English contentDoes that make sense?
After that’s setup, one cool option would be to map a subdomain of guthman.fr like en.guthman.fr to guthmanenglish.wordpress.com. This way, you could have a custom domain on both of your sites with guthman.fr displaying French content and en.guthman.fr displaying English content.
To do this, go to the Dashboard for guthmanenglish.wordpress.com and follow these steps:
Finally, once we’re all setup with the domains, it’s time to link them together. The easiest way to do this would be to add a custom link to your menu bar following the instructions here:

A small but significant error. The address for the French language blog should be: guthman.fr
Also, while I’m updating this, WordPress says this address is mapped to my blog here but Godaddy (from whom I have supposedly bought the registration for this address) still resolves to a Godaddy parking page. Do I need to point someplace from Godaddy or is this something else I screwed up when I set up this blog?

Thanks for the response. I’m going to try to work my way through this using a combination of your response and Option 3. But, before I start creating new blogs and whatnot, let me ask this:
Would it be possible to “unmap” the guthman.fr so that I can use it for the French site and change guthman.wordpress.com to the English site?
Also, can I just delete all of the content now on guthman.wordpress.com without also making the blog inactive? That way, I would just import my Le Monde site to the guthman.fr site and then import English language content to the guthman.wordpress.com site?

I went to Godaddy and changed the DNS to point to WordPress. I will know soon if I did that right.
I didn’t do well with the sub-domains and finally gave up on them but I did create a new blog called guthmanfrench.wordpress.com and imported everything from the existing Le Monde blog. That will be the French language site.
Following the directions in your email, I think I successfully created a new menu item in each blog that allows people who arrive at the French blog to click and go to the English language blog and vice versa.
I will give the guthman.wordpress.com address to the Reverso-Collins people as the place to send the machine translated English language versions.
I think that if you can can disconnect the guthman.fr address from guthman.wordpress.com and map it to the new guthmanfrench.wordpress.com address, everything will be fine.
As a separate question, is it possible to change the favicon?

This is perfect. It looks like you’ve been able to get the majority of steps figured out. I went ahead and moved the domain to guthmanfrench.wordpress.com so you should see the custom domain when you load that blog.
As a separate question, is it possible to change the favicon?
