You cannot install any custom theme or any third party theme into any wordpress.COM hosted blog and there is no upgrade that changes that. The “add new theme” option does not exist on any WordPress.COM hosted blogs. You are confusing WordPress.ORG software with WordPress.COM hosted blogs.
There is no FTP access and no blogger installed plugin capability on any free hosted WordPress.COM blogs and there is no upgrade you can purchase here that changes that reality.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/The only themes we can use on WordPress.com hosted blogs are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and in your dashboard at > Appearance > Themes
See: http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/
If you want to use a third party theme you will have to get web hosting http://wordpress.org/hosting and set up your own WordPress.ORG install.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Be sure to read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Q2. How can I tell from the demo site which are pages and which are blog posts and categories please?
See here and examine the links below very closely
Example of a static page that will never automatically update link:

Your blog is wearing the Motif theme.
This is the detailed theme description page link https://wordpress.com/themes/motif/ where you find set up instructions.
This is the live demo site link https://motifdemo.wordpress.com/
In the custom menu at the top of that site the posts are found under the “Blog” link.

Thank you timetheif. Re Q1. I have another site singyourvoice.com which I think is a .org site, but I am not sure how to tell, and the Flatio theme doesn’t appear there on search either. Are you able to tell?
Also, are there any .com themes that have a similar look and feel to Flatio that you know of for me to look at?
I have an external host (host gator) that use for singyourvoice.com and can set up my new site there. In the longer term, I will be migrating all my content form all these blogs to the one new website/blog that I am keen to use the Flatio theme, or one with a similar look and feel.

Hi again,
That site is not hosted by WordPress.COM. We do not provide support for it. Our support docs do not apply to it. Our themes cannot be used on it and themes used on it cannot be used on WordPress.COM blogs either.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins (passwords), features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
For support for that site if you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there for help with your issue.
Also, are there any .com themes that have a similar look and feel to Flatio that you know of for me to look at?
It’s not a special theme at all. It’s an old fashioned simple two column white minimalist theme. For similar themes that can be used on WordPress.COM hosted blogs only see here:
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/capoverso/
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/chateau/
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/blogum/
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/origin/ -
In the longer term, I will be migrating all my content form all these blogs to the one new website/blog
See here for creating an XML export file that will contain only your content (not the theme) and then importing it into a wordpress.ORG software install.

Are you by any chance talking about the Flato theme?
If so, we offer a fork (variation) of it on WordPress.com, called Plane:

Hi Kathryn, it is not Flato but Flatio theme. See http://theme77.com/flatio/
Thank you anyway for replying. -
