Flickr Slideshows Still Not Working in WordPress
-
It was always hit and miss whether a Flickr slideshow URL or HTML would run in a WordPress page, or just sulk and look back at you like unflushable waste.
Flickr’s upgrade hasn’t improved matters. So who is to blame? WordPress or Flickr?
So what’s the secret formula? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
Flickr changed the structure of their links recently, so smart money says it’s Flickr’s fault. I understand WP.com staff are in contact with them about the issue.
-
@Rain, do you have a link for that piece of information? I can’t see that there’s any difference, at least with my flickr photos/sets.
@littlerichardjohn
Secret forumula =
make sure the link is not a link (use the “unlink” button if it is)
that the URL is on its own line in your post/page
that the URL is appended by /show/And FWIW, Maggie’s flickr slideshow works a treat.
-
‘make sure the link is not a link (use the “unlink” button if it is)’
Check.
‘that the URL is on its own line in your post/page’
Check (and not centre-aligned or anything outlandish)
‘that the URL is appended by /show/’
New one on me, but check.
All I get since adding the ‘show/’ is a blank black rectangle.

All I got before was the text, except when I got a slideshow. Since when did this ‘/show/’ appendix happen? -
@rain-i saw that about the RSS feed for the flickr widget, but didn’t see anything about links, so far. (Been mostly absent anyway)
@littlerichardjohn-That /show/ is the extra bit for putting the slideshow in your post and if you look at the code for the post with Thatcher’s funeral, then you’ll see it in the URL for the set. It’s been in use since WordPress.com started offering oembeds, but yes, flickr has been buggy.
Regardless, what it looks like you are trying to do in the post you linked to just now is embed the flickr flash slideshow, and that won’t work here because it’s flash. See here http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/07/17/gigya-2-flickr-slideshows/
What’s the URL for the actual set on flickr?
And what browser are you using?
-
URL
http://www.flickr.com/photos/amjamjazz/sets/72157633696851506/show/with/8834391884/
When I add the appendix, it’s just a black rectangle.

While we’re on the subject, why do the Flickr slideshows I can display have such an enormous background?Chrome browser.
I tried the Gigya ‘short’ code, and that didn’t work either. Not that it’s a realistic long-term solution. -
It looks to me like you are trying to link directly to the set slideshow on flickr.
In order to use it on your WordPress.com site, you need to use the set URL which is
http://www.flickr.com/photos/amjamjazz/sets/72157633696851506/ and then add show/So: http://www.flickr.com/photos/amjamjazz/sets/72157633696851506/show/
Yes, unfortunately the flickr slideshow that is a result of the above code has a very large display area to include portrait shots. So when viewing landscape images, you’ll see the black background. It’s not something we can eliminate.
The Gigya shortcode solution has been working for quite some time already and is the preferred solution for some. If you look at the slideshow display on Panos’ site, you’ll see that it’s much more subdued.
-
You say
http://www.flickr.com/photos/amjamjazz/sets/72157633696851506/show/
(?)
Then how did I do this?
http://biginabox.com/2013/03/18/funeral-in-trelech/The slideshow URL used to work, sometimes. Now nothing seems to.
-
Hang on…
OK. Panic over. Remember to unlink.
But it really didn’t used to be this way. It’s now a different technique completely.
What changed? And when it does again, could we know? -
This “technique” has already been in use for quite some time, at least since 2009 when oembeds became available on WordPress.com.
-
And your last question is quite pertinent. We’ll know when it stops working when it stops working. Nothing is written in stone. :)
-
Then at some point, Flickr must have changed the URL in the Slideshow share window. Because all the FSSs I’ve placed were copied from there, not from the set.
