Flipping the discussion settings

When selecting the ‘an administrator must always approve the comment’ setting, is it possible to have a list of pre-approved commenters? At the moment, the option only goes the other way – choosing ‘comment authors must have a previously approved comment’ and you have to create a list of people whose comments are held in the moderation queue.

When that ‘comment authors must have a previously approved comment’ setting is chosen, after the first comment from any commenter has been approved by the Admin, when they submit another comment the software will detect the commenter has a previously approved comment and will post the second and all following comments submitted automatically.

Thanks for getting back to me, timethief. Sorry, I wasn’t clear with my question. I don’t want second comments automatically approved – what I’d like to do is have everyone in the moderation queue but to have the option of a few commenters getting automatic approval. At the moment, you can create a list of exceptions if you select the second comment automatic approval option, but you can’t create a list of exceptions if you select the everyone in moderation option. Is there a way to fix this?

I’m sorry but that’s not possible. It’s not a case of a “broken” feature it’s simply an option we have never had and I can say that with confidence as I’ve been here over 6 years. If you like to suggest it to Staff I’ll flag this thread so it’s moved to the Ideas Forum.

Yeah, I thought that would be the case. It seems odd that the option only goes one way, but I’m sure there’s a reason for it.
