Flounder theme: Layout question
-
In the Theme Details of the Flounder theme it says there are options for one column, two columns and a left sidebar and a right sidebar. Also on the illustration of the theme there are images and text in the strip to the right of the central white text bar. However I cannot find anywhere in the dashboard where these options are available. Is this because I’m using the theme in WordPress.com rather than WordPress.org
Here’s a link to the site in question
Thanks

Hi Tony, are you sure you were looking at the theme info page for Flounder? I’m looking at this page and I don’t see any column/sidebar options mentioned, nor do I see a “central white text bar” – Flounder is pretty colourful and the screenshots don’t show much white at all. Is it possible you were looking at a different theme?

Hi Kathryn. If I click on Theme Details when viewing Themes from the Dashboard, there is a paragraph headed Tags that says:
Tags: Two Columns, Three Columns, Left Sidebar, Right Sidebar, Post Formats, Custom Header, Featured Images, Editor Style, Custom Menu, Blue, Gray, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple, Yellow, Dark, bright, clean, colorful, Dark, minimal, modern, playful, vibrant, blog, journal, lifestream, tumblelog, design, Custom Background, Custom Colors, Fixed Layout, Infinite Scroll, Red, Responsive Layout, RTL Language Support, Silver, Translation Ready, White
I assumed that the reference to columns here meant that it was possible to have a number of columns in Flounder. Is that not the case? The “white central text bar” I refer to is the area where the text is placed on the site I gave the link to which was this. As you can see there is a central area with white background and it holds the main text. To the right of that text is a dark grey panel. In the examples on theme page for Flounder, and in fact on the page you link to, there is an image and text in the equivalent panel which, in the case of your example, is to the right of the image of the fish and is dark green.
I cannot see anywhere in the Dashboard how I can access that right hand column to insert images or text?
Thanks for your help
Tony

Flounder is really a three-column site – I don’t see a way to have only two columns, so I’ll report that to our developers so “three columns” can be removed from that area.

Ah – that area is actually a light bluish-grey – it’s the hex colour #ecf0f1, which you can see here: http://0to255.com/ecf0f1
My guess is that your monitor is not displaying colours quite accurately. :-) That can happen, especially if it’s an older monitor.

To display the right column you can drag some widgets into the right sidebar area under Appearance > Widgets. You already have a search box in the right column currently.
The fact that your right column is mistakenly being displayed below the left is what we’re looking at in your other thread.

Thanks. :-)

Hi Kathryn. Sorry my 69 year old brain doesn’t work as it used to and I’m still confused.
If you look at the Flounder theme here there appears to be a left sidebar containing the menu, a first column with a pale green background which contains 2 paragraphs of text, a second column that has a pin and what looks like a list and then a right sidebar that contains Recent posts, Archive etcWhat I can’t find is how do I access that second column?
As regards the problem of the positioning of the right sidebar I’ve answered your questions in the other thread.
Many thanks for your patience and help.

What I can’t find is how do I access that second column?
.
The screenshot you reference is displaying Flounder’s blog page, with the second column displaying posts, which use various post formats, like standard, quote, sticky, etc. Each post format has a different background colour scheme to vary things visually. You can learn more about post formats here.
Currently, you don’t have a blog set up, which is why you’re not seeing that sort of content anywhere – you’re only using pages, not posts. If you’d like to have a blog, you’ll need to create a blank page and call it Blog (or whatever you like) and then choose it from the dropdown menu next to “Posts page” under Settings > Reading.
https://evanwilliamsconsultancy.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php
Once you do that and start adding some posts, your blog will appear at the new page you created. For example, if you call the page “Blog” then your posts will appear at evanwilliamsconsultancy.com/blog/
Let me know how it goes!

Ah OK I get it now! At the moment my son is using his website with just static pages and I’m assuming that that’s why nothing is appearing in that second column. As he develops his site then he may have blog pages so I’ll wait until then and see what happens.
Many, many thanks for your patience and help Kathryn.
