Fluctuating numbers of 'Likes'
-
My site’s ‘Likes’ keep fluctuating dramatically. For example, my ‘http://russellbuchanan.wordpress.com/2011/09/18/pacoima-jr-high-school-airplane-crash-of-1957-audio/ post has gone from 600+ ‘Likes’ to three for no reason. The numbers have been going back and forth for months, but for the last couple weeks the lower number has prevailed. All my posts have the same problem. Please help.

Thanks for providing an example! This has to do with some recent changes we made in regards to how Facebook sharing numbers are calculated.
Recently, all .wordpress.com URLs were forced to HTTPS. When we switched from HTTP to HTTPS URLs for .wordpress.com sites, we encountered an issue where all Facebook shares were lost because they were associated with the HTTP URL. As a “fix”, we grabbed both of the share values (from HTTP and HTTPS URLs) and summed the totals. We’ve since stopped the summing so shares to previous HTTP URLs will not be counted in the sharing buttons. We stopped summing the counts because it was leading to some duplicate counting.
You can see the effects illustrated at the two following URLs:
The HTTPS URL (top) is returning 3 shares. The HTTP URL is return 628. Going forward, you will see the 3 number (which will increase with future shares to the HTTPS URL). The only fix for this in the future would need to come from Facebook.

Thank you for your amazingly fast (I mean, like immediate-fast) response and your explanation. I shall muddy on with my pitiful new likes/share count, which actually weren’t too thrilling in the first place.
Thanks again,
RB
