Follow blog widget not listed on my widgets page

Hi, I’m editing a friends blog (www.thewritecoach.com) we built the site last summer, we want to add the follow blog widget to the sidebar but the widget is not showing in our list of available widgets. we are currently using WordPress 3.1.3, is this widget only available in newer versions? or is there somewhere I have to download it from?
I’m hesitant to update if I can avoid it, I’ve had some huge problems updating blogs in the past :(

You really need to upgrade as there were security fixes in the last few updates
