'Follow' Button Wants Password or Registration—Why?

My wife wants to follow my blog, and receive an email every time I publish a new post. But when she clicks ‘Follow’ she gets a box asking not only for an email address but a password, or for her to register with WordPress.
She doesn’t want a WordPress account; she just wants to follow the blog and get email notices. Doesn’t make sense to force anyone to register with WP just to Follow a blog.
Is there something wrong with the button on my blog?

Is the site hosted by wordpress.COM or is it a wordpress.org software install on paid hosting? What is the URL of the site?

@walkingcreek did she/you enter her email address in the place mentioned in the support doc that tt linked to? The place to enter an email address in the Action bar will only appear to people who are not logged in to WordPressdotcom.
