  I’m fairly new to the whole blogging scene and was wondering how people typically interact with their followers.

  Now, on sites such as Twitter, the interactions, I have found, are often quite impersonal what with the follow-me-and-I’ll-follow-you mentality. Is WordPress similar in that sense? Should I feel obligated to follow back my followers regardless of personal interest?

  Yes, what you describe has become very common. The advent of like buttons and auto-posting to social networks has meant the blogosphere has become less personal. You should never feel obligated in any way. These posts of mine may be helpful.
