Follower notification

What exactly does it mean when I get a message saying X people have followed my blog? It doesn’t tally with the number of visits to the site or the number of followers I have. And it can’t just indicate that they’ve been notified of a new post, because the number varies, or sometimes I don’t even get the “follow” notification. Not a big deal, but I’d just like to understand,

No. I have already checked it and it doesn’t answer my question. I thought it just indicated the number of people who had been notified of a new post, but as I said the number varies and I sometimes don’t get a notification at all, which shouldn’t happen if it’s an automatic notification process.

Could you reply with a specific example of one of these notifications? It would help to know the exact number that shows up in one of those follower notifications — I can use that to look into this for you. :)

bdhesse, mel, and 35 others followed your blog “Gert Loveday”
I got this notification yesterday 21/5. I don’t have the previous ones but I don’t think I got any notification when I posted on Sunday 17/5 and I think the previous notification was in the twenties though my listed followers were around 38.

Hi there,
Right now, your blog has a total of 40 followers. You can check that on your My Stats page, in the section titled “Totals, Followers, & Shares.” In that box, you can click on the word “Blog” to see more details about your blog’s followers.
There, you can see that 37 of your followers are WordPress.com followers, while 3 are email-only followers. Those email-only followers won’t appear in your notification about the people who followed your blog, since they aren’t WordPress.com users. The notification will only refer to the other WordPress.com users who are following the blog. (That’s why the notification only mentioned 37 followers instead of all 40.)

Rachel, that was already clear to me. My question related to the fact that at times I don’t receive any notification that X people have followed and at times the number following varies. But don’t worry about it any further.

Ah, sorry about that — I misunderstood your question. That notification pops up when you get a new WordPress.com follower on your blog. It will show the newest follower or two (for example, bdhesse and mel in the example you gave) and the number of other followers on the blog. However, the number might vary if previous followers have unsubscribed from the blog.
