  Until recently the number of followers included my Facebook friends. Today that number was removed. Was this done by WordPress or did I make a mistake?

  Did you disconnect Publicize? http://en.support.wordpress.com/publicize/

  I had not disconnected Publicize, but I connected again and now the numbers have come back.
