in the last 3 days i have gotten email notifications that my blog has gotten 3 new followers but neither my stats nor the counter are reflecting the addition of those followers, why is that?

You can also use: https://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php?page=stats
*replace NAME_OF_BLOG in that URL with the actual name of your site.

Note that many of us keep our personal email addresses off the web as they are for family and friend use only. Instead, we register throwaway email addresses that do not personally identify us and use them for blogging purposes.
If you are concerned about the number of subscribers then Volunteers cannot help you with that.

i was familiar w/the stats page. it is the number that is incorrect. i received notice (via email) that i had gained three new followers in the last couple of days but none of them are showing up in the list of followers on the stats page or on the blog counter which still reflects just (3).

Are you speaking of the email followers with @outlook.com emails?
Those are spammers. Random outlook emails are currently following a large number of WordPress.com sites, but these are automated follows not being done by real people. We are working on blocking these follows, and at the same time removing those that got past our filters as we detect them. That is why you no longer see them on your site.
