Follower's email announcing post.

My followers are getting my whole post in their emails. the banner is not there and they don’t see the whole site. Often the pictures don’t come up. I would prefer they get a few words as a teaser and have to go to the site to read the rest. How do I change this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

They will never get the header and the theme. They are sent the text in the posts. Whether or not they display images is determined by their email client. What’s sent is what’s in your RSS Feed for posts which does include all Media Files. http://marybmaulsby.wordpress.com/feed/

The setting here > Settings > Reading is only for the RSS Feed summary and does not affect the posts.
For each article in a feed, show
    _ Full text
    _ Summary

If you want to display only excerpts on the front page of the blog followed by read more links, you can insert “the more tag” into each post prior to publication.

Alternatively, you can switch to using a theme that automatically displays front page excerpts. This is a list of active themes on WordPress.com that use the excerpt instead of full post content. Here are the themes that do provide that feature > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/theme-with-automatic-excerpts?replies=13#post-1396410

As your RSS Feed is displaying summaries, I tagged this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond.

Thank you timethief. That is very helpful. Not sure how to subscribe, though. I am new to all of this.

I can’t see the emails we send your followers, so I’ve subscribed to your site. I’ll get an email the next time you post and I can take a look.

Thanks! I have mixed feelings. I want people to go to the site, but people have said they like getting the full post on email. I would hate to think they would stop reading in the middle if they have to leave where they are. Thoughts?

Personally, I feel differently about different sites. Some of them I would totally visit to read the rest of the post and some I wouldn’t.

Your theme makes your content really readable, so I would probably visit your site to finish reading your posts, but I think this is really personal preference. Some people just like to do their reading in their email.

I know it’s a tough call. A lot of bloggers will only display a section of their post in their emails and RSS feed to help drive traffic as well as decrease some of the risks of content theft.

Definitely let me know if you have any specific questions about the pros and cons you’re thinking about. :)

Thank you Shawna. I really appreciate your feedback. I notice that people who go to my site don’t read the other two pages – only the home page. Maybe there is a way to make the tabs bigger or something. I will continue researching how to do that. Of course if they just get the email posts, they won’t go there anyway. haha.

I notice that people who go to my site don’t read the other two pages – only the home page.

This might have to do with your front page being your recent posts page. They can read all of your posts there, so they don’t need to go anywhere else. If you add some Read More tags to your posts this will shorten your posts on your front page and prompt people to open the post page to continue reading. This will also shorten the post content in your emails.

Let me know if I can help further! :)
