Followers get notified by email about all new comments…

  I recently learnt that some subscribers/followers of my site receive automatic email notifications every time a new comment is posted on any page, regardless of whether or not they themselves have previously commented on that page or on any page. In other words, some people who have “followed” the site but never directly interacted with it get notified nevertheless whenever anyone comments on it. I was surprised to discover this and wasn’t aware that this usually happened. Is it a technical malfunction of some sort or do all followers of all WordPress sites get notified in this way about all comments? Is there any way to disable this function in my site settings, as I’m sure not everyone will want this?

  How did you get that? I am trying to make it happen and can’t do it without using heavy and complicated plugins.
  I am looking for a simple plugin that will add a very simple way for the registered user to check and receive email notifications on every comment left on the site. So far with no luck.
