Followers to my Blog

  • Unknown's avatar

I have nearly 500 people following my blog who receive an instant email as soon as I publish a new blog.

It would appear that they are sent the entire blog within the email. This means that they have no need or reason to actually visit my blog as they are given the content via email.

Am I right in assuming that none of these followers are included in my audience figures and daily views of my blog?
If that is the case I cannot estimate how many people do read it.

Is there a ay that they are only sent the first section of the blog on the email so that they have to visit the site to read it in full?

    Many thanks.

    Hi there,

You can absolutely change what goes out to your readers. If you go to Settings>Reading on your dashboard the 4th setting from the top says “For each article in a feed, show” if you click “summary” instead of full text, your readers will get summary e-mails rather than full posts.

Let me know if that solves your issue, or if you have more questions.

    Many thanks all done.

I assume that the people who received the emails were not included in my “views” summary so hopefully the figures will go up now.

You assumed correctly. Hopefully this will give you a better idea of how many people are reading regularly!

I have a blog that is for teachers and I have recently got a follower who is very disturbing. He has violent sexual writings on his profile. I could not figure out a way to get rid of him. I turned off the follower category.

How can I get rid of this disturbing follower on my educational blog? WordPress really needs the option to approve followers. I do not want this individual associated with my blog!

    See here please https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-to-ban-a-follower-a-follower-is-a-porn-site?replies=5#post-1956314

    Short version:
You can’t block or delete followers because there is no means of blocking anyone on the internet from access any public blog and submitting comments if and when comments are open.

    Long version:
We cannot block or delete subscribers from public blogs. Anyone and everyone can access public blogs and that’s indeed what the public designation means. However, please read this about public blogs that become private blogs > Blog Privacy and Subscribers > http://wpcommaven.wordpress.com/2011/09/05/blog-privacy-and-subscribers/

To change blog visibility to Private go to Dashboard > Settings > Reading scroll to Site Visibility and choose option 3
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

You don’t need an upgrade of any kind at all to invite multiple people to contribute to a private blog. See:
    adding users http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/
    user roles http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/
Note that you have complete control over everything that’s posted to your blog via comment moderation
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-moderation

For trolls, you can “blacklist” them at Settings > Discussion toward the bottom of that page. Enter their email address, their username, and if they included it, their website URL. That will automatically send them to moderation so that their comments do not appear on the blog. Do note though that if they are determined, they can use a different email address or username to get around that.

Also, do not put their IP address in the blacklist. IP addresses are no longer unique, and you might end up blocking legitimate visitors. In fact for over a decade only about 30% of us have IPs that trace back to any individual computer. Also, all they would have to do is go to a wi-fi hot spot, or connect via a different ISP and they could get around that.

@smithadelic I’m afraid there is nothing I can do to help you block the follower in question, but there are ways to make sure his presence as a follower doesn’t impact your blog.

The first thing is to mark his site as mature. Here’s more info on that (as well as a description of where WordPress.com draws the line between “mature” and a violation of the site’s terms of service: http://en.support.wordpress.com/mature-content/.

You should also know that while he may be following you, doing so doesn’t actually associate him with your blog in any way. It just means that when you post a new post, he gets a notification. There is no way for your other readers to connect him with your site.

If, he decides to comment on one of your posts, you can prevent the comment from showing up in a variety of ways. Here’s a rundown of your options: http://en.support.wordpress.com/unwanted-comments/

I know that’s not exactly what you were hoping to hear, but I hope some of my suggestions help.
