hello.
I am trying to do an extremely simple thing: follow blogs.
where can I find a button to do this?
there doesn’t seem to be any such button on some sites I tried.
examples:
terrytao.wordpress.com
johncarlosbaez.wordpress.comfollowing blogs is literally the only feature I want from wp and that’s not working fine!

Not all blogs will include the option to follow their blog, but it is possible to follow those two example blogs you shared!
First, please make sure you are logged into your WordPress.com account.
Then, visit a blog you’d like to follow and look in the lower right corner for the follow button. It will look like this: https://cl.ly/1U3h1w3c240m
Do you see it?

You can manage the blogs you are following at https://wordpress.com/following/manage .
When I navigate to https://terrytao.wordpress.com/ (for example) and I am scrolled to the very top of the page, a Follow button appears on the right hand side. It looks like the image here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/following/#how-to-follow-blogs

And just to share another method. You can visit your Reader’s search option here:
https://wordpress.com/read/search
Then search for the blog you’d like to follow and it should show up in ‘Sites’ on the right side. Here’s a screenshot of how that looks:

yes I do see it on mobile. however the button doesn’t show on my Mozilla Firefox on Ubuntu 14.04. is this some known issue?

That’s interesting. Does it work in a different browser on your computer?
For Firefox, I recommend following the troubleshooting steps outlined here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/ .
This will ensure that your browser is up to date and supported, your browser cache & cookies are clean, that JavaScript is enabled, and more.

I am not aware of any known issues. But you could have a browser related issue.
