Follwers and statistics
-
It’s more a “bragging rights” question than anything, but are “followers” counted as “hits” or not with the statistics on any day?
That is, before I had “followers” I had more page views per day than I have now that the number of followers has gone way up. My site is a “niche” one, and non-commercial, but I’d be interested to know if that “niche” is a few hundred or a thousand people.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there. The number of followers are composed of logged in WordPress.com users who have clicked the Follow button while on your site or viewing your site in the Reader, non-logged in users who have opted to follow your site via email through the follow blog widget, and your followers on any social media networks you have connected to your blog via Publicize. People who follow your RSS feed through other feed readers are not included in the follower count as there’s no way for WordPress.com to obtain that information.
Having people as followers is no guarantee that they’re actually reading your blog. Also keep in mind that people reading your posts in the Reader (without clicking through to your site), in email notifications, and via the RSS feed in other feed readers are not counted as pageviews. Pageviews only refer to people who physically click through to your site itself. http://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/
Setting your feed settings to only show post summaries rather than full posts will prevent them from reading the entire post in the Reader/email and will force them to click through to the blog itself. Keep in mind, though, that some people will be annoyed by having to click through the blog and may actually stop reading if you do this, so it’s a gamble either way. Your feed settings are under Settings ->Reading in the dashboard. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/reading-settings/
I’d be interested to know if that “niche” is a few hundred or a thousand people.
Personally, I think the only stats that truly show how popular a site is are those showing engagement, i.e. how many people participate by commenting and sharing posts. Those two actions are the only real proof that people actually read and were touched by a post, but that’s just my opinion – I’ve no evidence to back it up :)
