Font changes

I have noticed recently that in the middle of a paragraph for no apparent reason the font size changes. I now have to write in MS Word to avoid this.

  • Hi there,

On what post is this happening? I took a look at your site jackscohen.wordpress.com and all the text is the same.

Look at the blog articles from June 4-8. I corrected my last two blogs by copying the paragraphs to Word and then changing the font size of the whole paragraph and then copying it back. I tried other ways, using the block editor, but that didn’t work.
    Thanks
    Jack

  • Here’s a look at the code behind one spot where the font has changed:

In fact t<span style="color: var(--color-text); font-size: 1rem;">h</span><span style="color: var(--color-text); font-size: 1rem;">e opposite was happening, especially in the US. In 1896 Bernstein published a series of articles in the socialist journal <em>Die Neue Zeit</em> entitled "Problems of Socialism." In 1899 he went even further and published a book entitled "Evolutionary Socialism." In 1901 he was allowed to return to Germany and became a member of the Reichstag from 1902-1928.</span>

Typically the addition of these span tags means that it was copied and pasted from elsewhere and the browser is attempting to keep the formatting in tact.

You mentioned Microsoft Word, and one big problem with that is that Microsoft Word is a rich text editor, whereas WordPress is an HTML editor.

We do our best to translate Microsoft Word’s proprietary formatting, but at the end of the chain, it’s still an entirely different language to WordPress: https://wordpress.com/support/microsoft-word/

Overall, we recommend composing your posts directly in our editor to avoid this, and we have some extensive documentation available at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/

Hi: I am sure that in these cases I did not use Microsoft Word. But, even if I had it would have been written with the same formatting. Why would it change suddenly in the middle of a word or a phrase. In fact for my last two blogs I copied the offending paragraphs with the smaller font into Word, changed the font and size to a uniform one, and then copied it back into the WordPress editor, and it was fine. N o it is a problem with your editor. Sorry. Jack

  • Was the post in question typed entirely into the WordPress editor, or was it copied from elsewhere?

There were several (I counted at least 5) posts that were typed entirely in the WordPress editor, two of which I corrected with Word. That was why I was so surprised to see this discrepancy. There was no apparent reason why in the middle of a sentence the font suddenly became smaller? It looked OK when I typed it, but in the output/published/previewed version it had this error.

  • Thanks for the extra info, I’ll see if I can reproduce it.

Hi: The blog I sent today has reduced font size for a section that I edited by reducing it from a numbered list to straight text. Maybe that will help. Jack

  • Hi,

that post again seems to have some formatting on it, have you copy-pasted it, or was it written directly in the editor?
Also, have you tried using the new Block Editor? There you can format each paragraph separately:

NO, all I did was write it in the WordPress editor and then change it forma numbered list to text. I tried the Block editor to fix this problem, but maybe if I use it form the beginning it might help. Jack

  • Ok, we can’t reproduce the issue, so let’s rule a few more things out.

First, please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/

If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.

If it is, please do these two things:

    1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.

    2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.
