Font changes for a few seconds

  • Unknown's avatar

    Since a few weeks, the font of my blog changes for a few seconds every time I load the blog. First it’s normal, then it changes to another font and then it’s normal again. This occurs on different laptops and computers. It even happens in the dashboard areas and I also noticed that it happens on other WordPress blogs. I wonder what’s causing this problem?

    I’ve just started creating a blog, and mine is doing the same thing as ‘marleen888’! Every time I move to a new page, the entire font style changes to a new one for anywhere between 3-10 seconds, then changes back to normal. My blog has not been made public yet, so I haven’t checked it as a ‘visitor’ to my own site, but I’m having the same problem as ‘marleen888’ above (in fact, it just happened to this post when I spell-checked it!). Is this normal for a WordPress blog site?

    @marleen888
    Have you copied and pasted any content into your posts and/or pages on your blog?

    Have you changed font families, colors and size in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page by coding into the HTML (Text) editor? http://en.support.wordpress.com/editors/font-size-color/

    Have you changed font colors in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page using the #4 icon (Select text color – change the text color) in Row 2 the Visual editor? http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2

    @marleen888
    I am using Firefox 14.0.1 and I don’t experince this when viweing your blog, granted you posted this thread on Julu 26th.

    We cannot ciew a private blog so we cannot see whatever you see.

    Is this normal for a WordPress blog site?

    No

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’m sorry I clicked the wrong key. “ciew” was meant to be “view”

    P.S. If this is also happening to you here in the forum then I suspect you have a browser add-on or browser extension that’s the culprit. Disable them all and check your blog.

    Hi Timethief, thanks for the response! I checked your response to Marleen888, and what I’ve done so far that might relate to what you asked: I added images, but only through the regular ‘add image’ channels; I tried to copy and paste some WordPerfect text to see if it worked, which it didn’t, so I cancelled out on the whole attempt; and I experimented with the ‘free trial’ of new fonts through the Design Upgrade page, but I reverted back to my original font after trying a few out.

    I just got your e-mail suggesting that I turn off any browser add-ons…I’ll give that a go and see what happens. I’m new to all this (as I’m sure you’ve guessed!), so this may take me a while…

    @torben78
    Now that you posted more information re: CSS editing I think you can reslove this very easily. To ‘reset’ a theme, you need to delete the CSS in the Editor, make sure the “add to existing CSS” radio button is checked, then save. Things should go back to normal.

    Okay, I hope I don’t sound like too much of an idiot here, but…where can I find the Editor? I’ve checked my blog’s dashboard area, and can’t find anything labeled ‘editor’…am I being dense, or am I just lost?

    In case it matters, I didn’t actually buy the upgrade, I just futzed around with the ‘try it for free’ option on the font page…

    I experimented with the ‘free trial’ of new fonts through the Design Upgrade page, but I reverted back to my original font after trying a few out.

    You can find the Custom Design section in Appearance → Custom Design in your dashboard.

    Okay, I found the CSS editor again, deleted what I’d attempted with it (I tried to preview a code where I could change my sticky note background from tan to white, based on comments on a different forum), I went into Fonts and reset them all to the original…and nothing. I did notice that it’s only the text font that changes for a moment, not the page header or subject headings.

    I’ll try to turn off some browser add-ons and see what happens. And this problem wasn’t happening from the start…I think it began when I first went into the Custom Design update area a few days ago and did the free preview of different font styles…

    I no longer think this is a browser issue. I think this is a CSS issue and I don’t help with CSS. :( Hopefully, thesacredpath will see this thread and help you.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Okay! Thanks for your time and attempt!

  • Unknown's avatar

    I flagged this thread so it will be moved to the CSS Forum. There I hope thesacredpath will give you a hand.

    Cool! Thanks again!

    Hello.

    I see two people total have reported this issue so far. I did try to reproduce the problem by visiting http://rideonblog.wordpress.com/ in a few different browsers and watching the body text font to see if it fluctuated in any way, and it I was unable to reproduce the problem you described.

    It really does sound like a browser issue. Just to make absolutely sure, can you check to see that you are using an updated version of your browser software? See http://browsehappy.com/

    You may also want to try clearing browser cache, which can be a helpful troubleshooting step for display issues like the ones you’re describing.

    I did also check out the sites on both of your accounts, and neither one has applied the Custom Design upgrade, so I would be surprised if custom CSS or unapplied font settings are the issue (I’m almost 100% certain those things aren’t related).

    Hi Designsimply! Thanks for checking back…my site is now public as you know, and I’ve visited it quite a few times, and discovered that this ‘font changing’ problem doesn’t occur when I check out the site as a visitor, but only when I’ve logged onto it as an administrator.

    I’ve also noticed that when the font changes, the green bar at the bottom of my screen quickly ‘loads’ something, before I move my cursor onto the page and it changes back.

    I’ll try your suggestions…it could be a browser issue, so I’ll work on that first. Thanks for the help!

    discovered that this ‘font changing’ problem doesn’t occur when I check out the site as a visitor, but only when I’ve logged onto it as an administrator.

    Strange!

    I did try testing again on two separate test blogs and I still couldn’t reproduce the problem. I logged in as the administrator on my test blogs, set the theme to Coraline, experimented with settings in Appearance → Custom Design → Fonts, and then tried viewing the home page to see if the fonts stayed static, and they did.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Yes, definitely strange! Sometimes, the font even changes again, to small wingding-like symbols, before changing back to normal! I did go into ‘Delete Browsing History’ and delete the browser caches, but to no avail.

    I’ll just keep messing with it…not a big deal, really, since the actual public side of it isn’t affected. It’s just an annoyance to go through every time I switch to a new page. Again, thanks for trying!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Well, if I can find a way to reproduce the problem, I will look into it further.
