Font color looks washed out

The body font of my blog looks grey (on my white background). I need more contrast! so I would like it to be darker, so that it looks more black-on-white. I have bought the Custom Design package, but am disappointed to find that it won’t let me do this. I have tried editing the CSS, have increased the font-weight and entered a line which says color: black, but it doesn’t seem to have made any difference.
Is there another way?
