Font colour formatting on posts
-
Hi,
Since the weekend, editing fonts in posts has not been working. For example, editing the colour of a word does not work, and only shows as black with a yellow highlight. Removing the highlight and adding a colour does not change the appearance once the post is updated. All features are appearing in the menu bar, however are not working. Editing as usual is not functional at all – all text appearing with a black font and yellow background despite any edits made.
Is this a bug? Or is there another way to fix this myself?

Hi There,
Could you please share the website URL on which you are facing this issue?
Does it show on your live website or just in the editor? -
Hi,
It is mostly in the live editor but does show on some websites. My website is currently not private but this also occurs on a website of someone I am working with. The URL is http://www.lastdayswatchman.wordpress.com
I have also found that I can no longer change colour of each word in a sentence. I can only change colour of the entire block.

Aallanbiss, have you tried to clear the cache in your browser? Save the post as a draft then clear your cache, make sure your browser is up to date, and even close the window. That is always the first thing I do when encountering an error or glitch like this.
Unfortunately you can’t change the color of single words because the color option only works as a full block.

Hi there,
This is a bug. Our developers are investigating, but it’s apparently a tricky issue to fix without breaking a bunch of other stuff, so I’m not able to tell you when it might be fixed.
We’ll update in this thread once we have more information, but for now I’m afraid all we can do is wait.

It is possible to change both the colors for an entire block, or for individual sections of text in a block:
https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/paragraph-block/#text-color
But the latter option is not currently working due to a bug.

Hi there,
Just wanted to update you that the highlight issue should be fixed now, but let us know if you see it still happening anywhere on your site.

Hi there,
I have spoken with a client who I am supporting who uses WordPress – his blog is the one I linked to above, to show an example of what he is experiencing on his blog.
Unfortunately, the issues described above are still ongoing, and quite pervasive.
The yellow highlight still exists on several posts, at least 5. If necessary, I can provide links to demonstrate. We have otherwise been advised to go into the post itself, make a change, and update, to get rid of the yellow highlight. However given how many posts this is – and there may be more on his blog, as he has over 900 posts – it is not feasible to do this to all affected posts. He is also very worried that any changes or edits he make would cause further issues or take too much time. He has several years of work – up to 2 years – on the blog and is very wary and anxious that recent changes will affect past posts. Is this possible?
We are still unable to change the colour of individual words in a sentence. Currently, we can still only change the colour of an entire sentence, however sometimes this doesn’t work either. When trying to use the pop-up menu, the colour option still does not appear – only highlight – and colour has to be changed from the menu on the right hand side. However this does not always “stick”; the process for changing colour doesn’t actually change the colour?
Additionally, the pop-up menu that comes when a line of text is clicked on has changed. I think this may be due to the bug meaning that my client had to alter the way he wrote posts. Perhaps not using blocks but by putting text in another way – he usually adds post as a heading block. There is now a much more complex menu that pops up rather than a simple one.
I do have pictures to demonstrate the two different menus, but I am unable to include them in this post.
On the affected posts, text size and formatting has also changed or been entirely removed, in some cases.
I do hope that a solution can be found as it seems the effect of the bug are much deeper than thought and are continuing on my client’s live edit and on his blog.
Thanks.

Hi there,
I’ve checked on this issue and it looks like our devs reported it as “fixed” over the weekend. This should prevent the highlighting issue from occurring in the future, but we’re still seeing a few reports trickling in.
With this in mind we’d like to take a close look at any content that is still showing the highlight. Can you share a link to the affected pages/posts so we can examine them further?

This is something our developers are actively working on as it affects other site owners as well. Thanks for your patience!

Hi there,
This issue has been fixed, though content on your site that was affected will not have the highlighting removed automatically.
For any posts/pages that were affected by the bug, edit it and make a small change like adding a period or a space, and update, and the editor should roll back the highlights automatically.
If that doesn’t work, you can follow the steps in this GIF:

Thanks, however our concern is the multitude of affected pages meaning this is quite a lengthy process. I will advise that this is the best solution, however, to remove the yellow highlights.
If that doesn’t work, you can follow the steps in this GIF:
We have tried this, however as I described, sometimes the change does not seem to ‘stick’. This is both for removing the highlights, and for changing colour of text itself. Do you know if this is related to the bug?

Thank you, I have linked some below – these are the pages we know are affected, however there may be more. Hard to tell due to the amount of posts my client has – it would take a while to check each one! We have noticed not only the yellow highlight, but also loss of edits made to text in general, such as font colour or size.

Currently the only solution is the manual steps in the GIF mentioned by my colleague above. We recommend correcting those as you encounter them, beginning with the items you’ve listed above. This should be fixed for all new posts and pages moving forward.
We have tried this, however as I described, sometimes the change does not seem to ‘stick’. This is both for removing the highlights, and for changing colour of text itself. Do you know if this is related to the bug?
It’s very possible this is related to browser and/or website cache when this occurs. Clearing the browser’s cache should help this. Please let us know if this persists, and if so, for which specific post or page. We’ll have a look at it.

Hi all,
Thank you for your support on this.
One other question I have is since the highlighting bug, a lot of previously formatted text has lost some formatting such as the font size. For instance changing from “heading 5” to “paragraph”.
Outside of manually changing this, is there another potentially easier/quicker solution? Would you recommend clearing the cache to solve this also?

When changing from Heading 5 to Paragraph, you’re essentially changing one block type to another, each with their own settings.
With that in mind, it wouldn’t be possible to carry settings over like that as described.
I hope this helps.

What I meant was that we as users didn’t change this – it seems to have happened around the same time the bug with the yellow highlight appeared.
Additionally, I have tried to clear my cache and browser history. I have also made edits to an affected page. Unfortunately, the yellow highlight behind text still remains. As it seems this advice hasn’t worked for me, is there any other solution?
I will continue to try this with my client’s blog to see if this works for him, however I wanted an alternative opinion just in case.

Not at the moment, aside from manually editing each affected block via HTML (under the three dots -> Edit as HTML in the editor – screenshot) and removing any
<mark>and</mark>HTML you see, which should be one set per block affected. Once you’re done, you can click the three dot menu again and choose “Edit visually” to switch back to the visual editor. Our development team is looking into this again, so we’ll post here when there’s an update.
