Font glitch

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve been having problems with the fonts on my blog (mainly the title). Everytime I refresh the page it shows the original theme font first and then it changes to the one I choose. Does anyone know how to fix it?

    Thanks!

  • Hi there,

The effect you’re describing is known as FOUT (flash of unstyled text) and is caused by your theme’s custom fonts.

To clarify, we use the theme’s default font to load the site’s content first, as custom fonts can take some time to load, depending on the speed of your internet connection. This means that no one is greeted with a blank page, and you don’t get punished by search engines for having a slow site.

However, this also means that there may be a flash between the theme’s default and custom fonts when someone first loads your site. This will be most noticeable on slower connections, so some visitors may never see this, but others (on a poor connection) will see this font change.

There is not much that we are able to do to address this, as the custom font you set is very different than the default script font your theme uses. However you do have a few options:

    1. Upgrade to the Premium plan (which has the ability to customize CSS) in which case CSS can be used to make force text to display only when the custom font is loaded so the default font is never shown, even briefly
    2. Design a custom logo that includes both your binoculars artwork and the title of your site in a single graphic. This can be done in editing software on your computer, and will ensure that the correct font shows (since it is embedded in the logo itself)
    3. Switch to a theme that uses a less fancy default font. The Baskerville theme font is very stylized and drastically different from the custom font you’ve chosen, so the FOUT is very noticeable. If you use a theme with a default font that is closer to your custom font, it’s likely the FOUT would be harder to catch.

Please let us know if you have any more questions. If you decide to upgrade to the Premium plan we can also help with the CSS you need if you decide to go that route. Learn more about our WordPress.com Premium Plan here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

    Hope this helps!

I’ll see which of these solutions work best for my blog.
