  • Hi there,

This can happen when pasting content from a word processor to a web editor – if you’ve never experienced this before you’ve actually been quite lucky.

The reason this happens is because word processors and websites use to completely different types of code, Rich Text Formatting (RTF) and HTML respectively, to represent text.

When you copy text you created in Word and paste it into the WordPress editor, the editor tries to interpret the RTF code and translate it into HTML, and most of the time it manages just fine. But sometimes it’s unable to do this conversion properly and you end up with text on your site that looks nothing like it did in Word.

To prevent this, it’s generally a good idea to always copy text from Word, and then first paste it into a text editor like Notepad, before copying it again and pasting into your site.

To fix it where you’ve already pasted it, you’d need to strip out any formatting currently applied to the text, but the method how to do that depends on which editor you’re using.

Can you please tell us on which site in your account this has happened, and also the title of the post (I assume it’s still a draft?), as well as whether you’re using the block editor or the classic editor to work on it?

  • Okay, so it’s https://thegypsylife.home.blog/2020/02/23/my-catholic-elementary-school-days/

That text isn’t actually bold, but has been added to your post as HTML headings. So the entire post is being styled in the same way that a heading would be.

To fix this, edit the post, and highlight all the content (just click in the text, and press Ctrl-A on your keyboard).

Then in the editor toolbar click the Clear Formatting button:

That will strip out all the heading tags, and then you can reapply any formatting you do want to the post. Once it’s looking the way you want, click the Update button to make the changes live on your site.
