Font Sizes: H1, H2, Paragraphs etc

Hi I have a question relating to the headings that you use when you write blog content.

I am using the basic free WordPress.com with no plug-ins and at the moment and I type directly into WordPress when composing an article.

When I create a new blog post I can see that there are several options on the ‘header size’, such as ‘Paragraph,’ ‘Heading 1’ ‘Heading 2’ etc.

From what I can see, depending on which header size you select, this makes the body of your text larger or smaller and can be used to draw attention to certain parts of your blog.

So my question is, does it matter much which header sizes I am selecting. I have read articles online which have stated you should start with an ‘H1’ and then an ‘H2’ etc in order for your post to perform better in search engines, but I am not sure if this is true or not.

At the moment, I type in the main title of post (which from what I can see, you cannot change the sizing of this) then I might select either an ‘H1’ or an ‘H2’ header to use as a sort of subtitle and then I type the full body of my post underneath using ‘Paragraph.’

Please could anyone advise if the header sizes and where you use them in your blog post have any effect on SEO, or are the different header sizes merely just a way to improve the overall look of a blog post?

    Many thanks.
