fonts

a couple of questions about fonts; 1. what’s the default font in Posts in my Pilchow theme? 2. if you don’t know what font family a font is, how do you figure it out? Is it verdana, arial, or…? Is typetester.org for identifying fonts?

These are the base fonts set in the CSS for Pilcrow:

    Georgia,"Bitstream Charter",serif

The way that works, is the first font is used unless the users computer does not have it installed, in which case the second font is used unless that one also is not installed on the visitor’s computer in which case the basic “serif” font (the base browser font) is used.

In some themes, there could be several fonts used for different elements in the theme, such as one for the title and tagline, a different one for post titles and widget titles, and yet another for the main body text in posts and pages.

As far as finding out what fonts are used, if you are using Firefox, there is a “fontfinder” add-on you can install that will identify the fonts being used.

Other than that, I just look in the CSS using the Firebug add-on for Firefox, or I just open up the CSS file (which is usually shown in the source code) and then peruse it.

Typetester is more for comparing fonts.

One thing to keep in mind is that unless you are using an online font site such as typekit for your fonts, you have to make sure the font you are using is a standard font that would be on all computers, otherwise the browser is just going to substitute on its own typically using its built-in serif or sans-serif. The following is a good general guide.

sacredpath: that fontfinder add on is cool; here’s its analysis of a small chunk of text on a post in the Pilchow theme:

    font-family (stack): Georgia,”Bitstream Charter”,serif
    Font being rendered: Georgia
    font-size: 14px

    …like you said!!!

Yeah, I have fontfinder installed as well, but I’m so used to looking in the CSS, that I seldom use it.
