Fonts look different in published version and preview

We have a free account. Our theme is “Scratchpad.” I have the headings set to Exo 2. In the site editor view, the subtitle is in a handwriting font; in the published version, it’s also Exo 2 but smaller. Why?

    In editor view:

    Published version:

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Sorry, images did not post correctly. They are here:

  • Hi there,

When I check on my end, the font is the same for both views:

You are still having this issue? What if you try a different browser like Chrome? Do you have this issue regardless of the browser you use?

    Thanks for the additional info!

Yes, I’m still having this issue. In Chrome, it’s exactly the same– I could post screenshots but it’s pointless since they look identical.

  • Hi, thanks for letting us know. Would you be able to share more about what operating system you’re using? I checked using Firefox as well, but the subtitle looks identical for me both within the Customizer and on the published site too.

You may be able to use this browser detector site to also share information about your operating system:

    I am using Windows 10. Firefox 106.0.5 (64-bit) and Chrome Version 107.0.5304.88

I also checked using a different computer and it’s the same in Microsoft Edge Version 107.0.1418.26 (Official build) (64-bit) and in Chrome Version 107.0.5304.88 (Official Build) (64-bit).

When I load the website in either of these browsers, I see the subtitle flash for a split second in the italic handwriting font before being replaced with the sans serif font you see in the screenshot.

  • Could you let us know what font you are trying to use, and can you confirm you are setting it through Customize > Fonts ?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, I explained this above: Exo 2. I posted a screenshot of the view in the “Customize Fonts” editor screen.

This is actually the expected behavior for custom fonts. Typically the base font loads (for a fast page load) and then is replaced by the custom font. This is not usually something you can perceive as it happens pretty fast, but you can catch it sometimes if you are on a slower network connection.

To clarify, the issue where the custom font is not shown is specific to one device, but not an issue on the other device you tested? This is a bit of a long shot but since custom fonts are served directly from Google, your network could play a role here. In all cases where you tested this issue, were you connected to the same wifi for all? Or was your second test (the one where you saw the fonts flash) done from a different network connection?

    Thanks for the additional info!

The same issue happened on two computers, which are sharing a network connection. However, one computer is on a VPN. I also checked the published page on my phone, and it is also not showing the custom handwriting font I selected.
To recap, the handwriting font I selected is not visible on our website anywhere that I can tell.
I will try tomorrow with another computer that is on a different network.

If the font I want is the default font, then is there any way I can reset my theme’s customization back to the defaults?

  • Hi there,

To be sure I understand, you did see the correct font here, yes? You mentioned that you saw the incorrect font briefly, but the custom font did replace it and stayed visible, yes?

And that computer was not connected via VPN? Thanks for clarifying.

  • Unknown's avatar

No, I saw the CORRECT font flash for a second, and then it was replaced by a different font, the one that you can see on the published page in my screenshot. I checked and this occurs on both computers– the VPN one and the other one.

You linked to this post so I am not sure where “here” is referring to, apologies. Thanks for your help with this.

I restored the fonts back to the default for the theme, and now the correct font is showing. Apparently there is a bug in this theme? I changed the font, but it was still showing me the default in the editor.

Thanks for helping me figure this one out. This is now resolved.

  • Huh, I’m glad to hear this was resolved. Please let us know in case something like this happens again, and we’ll be happy to investigate further.
