switching my site to be self-hosted
See: Moving to self hosted WordPress https://move.wordpress.com/
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
This is wordpress.COM support. We provide support only for wordpress.COM hosted sites. Our support docs do not apply to
(1) local installs of wordpress.ORG software on your own server or
(2) wordpress.ORG software installs on paid hosting, and we do not provide support for them at wordpress.COM.
(3) sites linked to wordpress.COM accounts with the Jetpack plugin so they display on the My Sites wordpress.com account page. The wordpress.ORG login link is here https://login.wordpress.org/ If you do not have an account yet then click Create an account https://login.wordpress.org/register/ and if you have lost an account password click Lost password? https://login.wordpress.org/lostpassword/
Some Jetpack solutions are here http://jetpack.com/support/
Others are in the Jetpack support forum at WordPress.org
http://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpackHowever, if help cannot be found at either one then they can file a Jetpack support ticket here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/?jetpack=needs-service
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page

What would you like to know?

Hello,
I am interested in creating a food blog that I will be able to monetize with ads to generate an income. Later on, I would like to have the option for people to purchase products from my site also. In terms of my server right now, can I monetize? Also, is there a page that has tips on search engine optimization? Is WordPress compatible with most ad networks? -
Hi Julianna,
I am interested in creating a food blog that I will be able to monetize with ads to generate an income.
Yes, you can monetize your WordPress.com site. All of the options are listed in this support article:
If you want to earn money from displaying ads on your site, you can apply for WordAds — this is the official WordPress.com advertising program.
Is WordPress compatible with most ad networks?
Advertising from third-party ad networks is not allowed on WordPress.com
Later on, I would like to have the option for people to purchase products from my site also.
PayPal buttons can be used to sell individual items on your site:

If you are looking for eCommerce to be a larger part of your site you may want to consider creating a self hosted WordPress.org site. The differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org are explained here:
With a self hosted site you can use the WooCommerce plugin to create an online shop:
Also, is there a page that has tips on search engine optimization?
There is! Have a look at these posts: All About SEO on WordPress.com and How to Publish Posts that Search Engines Will Love.
