Foodie Blogroll Widget

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I write a foodblog and am a member of something called the Foodie Blogroll. They provide code for their widget which displays a link to all of the member’s foodblogs. WordPress does not allow this code. Why isn’t their some sort of governance group to evaluate giving permission to certain sites widgets?

It is quite frustrating their other blog providers allow them, but WordPress doesn’t.

The Foodie Blogroll website is http://www.foodieblogroll.com

    Thanks,

    Michelle

I suspect that their code has javascript in it.

Put the code here between backticks (to the left of the number 1 on your keyboard) so that we can take a look at it

LOL nevermind. Backticks to left of #1 on the keyboard

    It is javascript.

    <script language="javascript" type="text/javascript" src="http://widget.foodieblogroll.com?BlogID=250&StyleID=23"></script>

OK-so then it won’t work on wordpress.com. If you read the above FAQ, it will explain why.

    I know about the FAQ.

Since javascript isn’t allowed for security reasons, then I doubt that WordPress.COM will make an exception for a single widget that contains it.

Is is possible to add a code from foodieblogroll that doesn’t contain javascript? Sometimes websites understand that not all blogging services allow javascript (not just WordPress.com) and offer an HTML code instead. Maybe it’s worthwhile approaching foodie with the problem. Cheers!

The Foodie Blogroll people know and acknowledge Javascript can’t be used on wp.com blogs. You can just keep using the graphic, assuming you are. There’s nothing else you can do.

The new widget also has an ad for a 3rd party group called FoodBuzz. I chose not to join FoodBuzz when approached last year and I’ll quit the Foodie Blogroll before I’ll use that ad-within-a-widget, which I could use on my self-hosted blog.

@ellaella, good thing to know about that ad in the widget.

BTW-is the Foodie Blogroll widget the sort of “previous” “next” “random 5” type?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, jennifer. The previous version was a scrolling list of blogs. This one lists the 5 most recent and 5 featured (maybe randomly chosen, I forget) blogs. The ad, of course, is prominently placed on top!

    Hi Ellaella,

It is your choice whether you want to be a member of blog roll or not. Obviously, I can only use it if I move my blog to another provider or host it myself.

Unfortunately, I deleted the previous code that linked to the site. Nevermind.

    Thanks,

    Michelle

Michelle-Sorry we couldn’t help with your problem. Those “previous” “next” “random” links can be written as straight links if you know your blog’s ID number, which you do. As far as getting the previous code, you should be able to get it from foodie or maybe the internet archive wayback machine still has it. Cheers

I just joined the foodie blogroll, myself and I love it! I guess the way I look at it is that the folks over there spend a lot of time and I imagine money on providing us with a great online community. So to me, it doesn’t matter that there is an ad on it, because they are giving away prizes to give us an extra bit of motivation. I have seen other blogrolls out there that even charge money to join – and for way less benefits in return. The foodie blogroll as far as I can see, is and always has been free and they want to keep it that way – so I guess that is why they put the ads. Not such a big deal the way I see it.

Apparently only a big deal for those that are trying to use it on their WordPress.COM blog and can’t, not only because of the javascript, but because of the third party ad.
