  You can place a text widget in your sidebar http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions but you cannot edit the footer text to remove any credit links.

  May I remove credit links such as ‘Blog at WordPress.com’, theme, font, or toolbar links?

  Note that if you remove your Site Tile and optional Tagline from this page > Settings > General that’s exactly where search spiders expect to find them. The result of removal may be issues with getting your content properly indexed and displayed in search engine page results.
