Footnotes and word-wrapping

    I am reposting a question that I posted early last Summer, but a household crisis intervened that prevented me from continuing the discussion. My problem:

    I regularly use footnotes in my articles, using the <sup></sup> commands. The problem is that I haven’t figured out a way to keep the footnote with the preceding period when the browser word-wraps. As a result I end up with a stray footnote in the next line. 

    NOTE: I am a dinosaur and use the classic editor. I understand that the block editor has a footnote function which resolves the word-wrapping problem; but I need a solution within the constraints of the classic editor.
