For beginners – start in com and use org later?
-
Hi people
Just wondering if you are a complete beginner to WP, is it a wise idea to start blogging with COM first just to get used to it and learn the basics? Later on when I am more comfortable, I can then switch to ORG?
Is this a common path people take? Or should I just start with ORG straight away?
Thanks again for your time.

My apologies – I cannot seem to edit my post.
I forgot to as one more question – will I be able to “transfer” my blog from COM to ORG? Let’s say I have a medium sized blog on my COM and I decided to transfer it to ORG. Would this be impossible?

….mods, if you want to close this thread, go for it. I have a lot of questions and I am not able to edit my original post. I do have another question:
The way COM and ORG work – are they different or similar?
The reason I ask all these questions is I am beginning to think if I should invest more time to my COM site when maybe I should be starting on my ORG.

Yes and yes.
Moving to self hosted wordpress http://move.wordpress.com
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
My advice is to learn how to become adept at blogging here at wordpress.COM where there is Staff support first.
quoting from a post on my site …
Moving from WordPress.com to WordPress.org means you will have additional responsibilities and if something goes wrong, you have to figure it out and fix it.Moving from WordPress.com to WordPress.org means you will be responsible for all installations and plugins, all WordPress.org software upgrades, all backups and all troubleshooting.
Current backups are critically important. They must be done frequently and the database must likewise be backed up frequently. If you have recent backup and something goes wrong, you can reasonably easily restore your site and not lose much data.
Moving from WordPress.com to WordPress.org means your new site will be starting all over again when it comes to earning authority and Page Rank. The Google Page Rank and Technorati authority and rank for your content belong to the root blog ie. the original WordPress.com URL for the blog.
Moving from WordPress.com to WordPress.org means purchasing domain mapping or an offsite redirect, so readers will seamlessly transferred between the URLs. Because when you purchase a domain name and move your content from WordPress.com to WordPress.org a new URL all the old links will be broken and visitors will experience a 404 (page not found) if you don’t.

Timethief I really appreciate your detailed answer. You mentioned
“My advice is to learn how to become adept at blogging here at wordpress.COM where there is Staff support first.”
Are you saying there is no forum like this in the ORG? I went to the ORG and I was actually able to find a forum similar to this?
Also, how long do you think I should practice on COM before moving to ORG? If the transfer process is going to be a bit tedious, I might as well just start from ORG, that is what I am thinking

Would someone be able to confirm if there is a support forum for ORG just like there is for COM?
Also I am thinking of starting with ORG to avoid having to transfer later on, would this be ok?

At wordpress.ORG there is free software and peer support forums only. There is no Staff support.

This is wordpress.COM support. We provide support only for wordpress.COM hosted sites. Our support docs do not apply to

(3) sites linked to wordpress.COM accounts with the Jetpack plugin so they display on the My Sites wordpress.com account page.Support for wordpress.ORG is found at http://wordpress.ORG/support/ The wordpress.ORG login link is here https://login.wordpress.org/ If you do not have an account yet then click Create an account https://login.wordpress.org/register/ and if you have lost an account password click Lost password? https://login.wordpress.org/lostpassword/

See also https://apps.wordpress.org/support/ for app support. Some Jetpack solutions are here http://jetpack.com/support/
Others are in the Jetpack support forum at WordPress.org

However, if help cannot be found at either one then they can file a Jetpack support ticket here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/?jetpack=needs-serviceAlso, how long do you think I should practice on COM before moving to ORG?
I have no answer to that because I have no idea how adept and how self sufficient you are.
