For the ability to change theme colours

Without upgrading.
Also, ability to modify fonts, font colour etc. will be great bonuses!Or can we do so already (I’ll never know… WordPress’s technical aspects are inherently labyrinthine and ever-unsolvable puzzles)?

Indeed they would be but there are no click a button and make a change in background colors or fonts here at wordpress.com. What we have are these options:
(1) change fonts & colors post by post and page by page by coding into the HTML editor http://en.support.wordpress.com/editors/font-size-color/
(2) use TypeKit fonts
(3) purchase and annually renew a CSS editing upgrade > http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-css/When it comes to changing background colors in themes only one them Dark Wood allows this option. The others don’t and the only way we can change them is via CSS editing. See here > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/about-background-colour?replies=28

Oh. My. Goodness. All that editing to change the font? No thanks, I’ll stick to adding pictures to reel in my readers and I, thank you very much.
And thank you very much (now with sincerity, instead of flabbergasted sarcasm) to both of you. :)
Phooee, being an incorrigible and quick-surrendering try-hard is some business. Wish I’d channel more of my blogging energy into actual work in an all-too-unreal reality.
I’ll stop rambling now.

@quixoticzephyr
As I said above there is no click a button and change a background color or font option that applies to all themes at wordpress.com. Moreover, the fact that CSS upgrades are available implies that it’s unlikely that the TinyMCE editor installed in wordpress will be upgraded to provide such abilities in the near future. :(
