Force image name change

  WordPress does not allow images to be deleted and then re-uploaded with the same name – if you try to do this it will instead append a number. In the past I’ve been able to get around this by waiting until month’s end. At that point the path changes and a file with the original name can be uploaded.

  Now, however, even this trick no longer works. When I try to update an image I previously posted in March, it continues to point to a 2012/03 path for the image. Thus I cannot use the original, desired image name. Is there any way around this? Are the image dumps no longer on a monthly schedule or is it just me? I would appreciate any help you can offer. Thank you.

  Is this on a WordPress.com blog or a self-hosted one?

  If it’s on a WordPress.com blog -I’ve never had this problem and I’ve been uploading images to WordPress.com for years. If you delete images from your posts (or pages) without also deleting them from the media library, then the system will think that you’re putting in duplicates. Maybe that’s what is happening?

  If you need to delete images, make sure they’re deleted from the media library AND from the posts or pages they were in.

  As I say, I was able to get around this by waiting until the next month to re-upload the image. With this no longer an option, is there any way at all to get a file with the original image name?

  I can’t help you any more than I have, so hopefully someone else will come by and give you some help instead (most of us are volunteers).

  However, in order to help you, we do need the URL of the blog you’re referring to, starting with http://

  the one linked to your username says it has been deleted.

  I’ve marked this thread for staff to look at, maybe they can help you. However, they don’t usually come on here on weekends, so you’ll probably have to wait til after then.

  It looks like staff have looked at it and don’t have an answer for you, since they removed the modlook tag but didn’t respond.
