I am trying to secure a .com url to read litoblog.com, but my Australian American Express card reads as invalid. Is this because PayPal controls usage of credit cards?
My experience has been that they don’t, which secures their reputation as US-centric. There are many people in the world who do not live in the United States

We do use PayPal as our payment processor, but they support a wide variety of foreign countries, including Australia: https://www.paypal.com/worldwide/
If your card is coming up as invalid, I recommend contacting American Express.

Thanks Manx,
The URL you sent me to does not deal with whether an Australian AMEX card will work in the States. I have recently used the card for transactions in the States, but those business do not use PayPal. I’ve made it a practice to never deal with businesses who do use this monolithic monopoly, and only found out too late that wordpress.com does. I do have a web site with WordPress.org, but the domain and hosting is done with HostGator who does business on their own. Sadly, I was hoping to get a simple painfree thing going with wordpress.com, but such is life. Alas, au revoir, litoblog.wordpress.com

You’re welcome!
Just to clarify, PayPal is US-based, but they accept payment from all countries listed at https://www.paypal.com/worldwide/
