Forever Theme -can I remove sidebar widgets?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi –

I’m using Forever theme, and I tried to remove all of my sidebar widgets (including Search, Archives, and Meta), and when I go to manage my sidebar widgets, it shows nothing there (as it should), but the Search, Archives and Meta widgets are still showing up on my blog.

Can someone tell me if I’m just not allowed to remove them on this Theme? Or if there’s something else I’m doing wrong?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

All themes here will display a default display that appears to contain a sample set of widgets in the sidebar and/or footer when you have not yet added any of your own. Go to Appearance > Widgets and add the widgets you desire and configure them and the default display will disappear.

If you do not want any widgets to display in any sidebar(s) at all (or footer widget areas) you place an empty text widget at the top of each sidebar or footer area. Then click to open, add no title, add no body text, click “save” and click “close”.

  • timethief – thanks for sharing your workaround.

I just wanted to clarify one little thing:

All themes here will display a default display that appears to contain a sample set of widgets in the sidebar and/or footer when you have not yet added any of your own.

While some themes do display default widgets, others don’t, and simply keep the widget areas hidden until you add your first widget.

Forever is an older theme that still displays some defaults until you add your own widgets. Your empty-widget workaround is a good one for folks who don’t want any widgets, and also don’t have the ability to add custom CSS to hide their widget area with some CSS code.

I hope this clears things up, and just let us know if you have any other questions.

    Hi there,
Can we please a have link to the list of themes that keep the widget areas hidden until you add your first widget?

There isn’t such a list, as it’s not a criteria by which we categorize themes in the directory, otherwise I’d be happy to give it to you. :-)

Okay. Are there any clues we can use to guesstimate which ones they may be?

  • It may be mentioned in the theme documentation. For example, something like this:

The primary sidebar appears on the right side of the content. By default, this sidebar is hidden and is only visible when you add Widgets. Once you add Widgets, this sidebar is visible on every archive template and index page, such as category, tag and author archives.

  • The newly-launched Minnow is another theme whose widget area is hidden by default until you add widgets:

When activated, your Custom Menu or Widgets will appear in a slide-out sidebar; click on the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the upper right corner to show them.

Okay then. They are all new themes with slideout sidebars. Got it.

Bummer. I mainly wanted to get rid of the widgets so that the “postings” section of my blog could be wider. Apparently there is no way to do that with my theme..?

  • That sort of theme customization would definitely be possible by adding some custom CSS to widen the main column and hide the sidebar, but it’s not something built into the theme.

If you decide to go that route, you can get help with the necessary CSS in the CSS customization forum.

  • timethief – just briefly wanted to address this:

They are all new themes with slideout sidebars. Got it.

The operative word is “new” rather than “slideout.” ;-)

Edin’s an example of another newer theme that doesn’t display the sidebar when there are no active widgets, but it doesn’t slide out.

We find this method generally less confusing for folks than the old convention of placing default items like a search box or categories or other “widget-like code” (they’re not technically widgets) in the sidebar/widget areas, so this is likely what you’ll see more of going forward in our themes.
