Format oddities in "paste" using visual editor

This morning I pasted in my WordPress visual editor a title copied from a site, and the formatting — h1 in this case — was also pasted! I was delighted: previously all pasting had been done as though I had specified “text only” pasting—that is, the “Text Paste” key was totally redundant: whether or not it was on, only text was pasted.

Seeing at last that copy once again copied formatting—and thus, thank God, links—I was delighted and posted a message here, but apparently the message has been deleted—and just as well: when I did my next copy and paste, I was again back to getting only text pasted, whether or not “Text Paste” key was operative.

    So: a couple of questions:

    a. What is the point of the “Text Paste” key? So far as I can tell, only text is pasted in any event, with all formatting lost—and in particular, with the loss of links, block quotes, italics, boldface, and lists.

    b. Is there any way to make the “Text Paste” key relevant? In other words, can the paste without the key include at least basic formatting, as specified in a. ?

    c. Why did the paste this morning suddenly carry across formatting? It doesn’t now.

Hi! Here’s a potentially useful link, particularly the section on “Pasting Text”:

Thank you for the link. In my visual editor (and I use WordPress.com) the copied material is always pasted as text, whether the “Paste as text” button is depressed or not. Indeed, I have not yet discovered how to copy formatted text (e.g., with links) and paste it TO KEEP THE FORMATTING. That is truly what I want to do—and not all that long ago the visual editor could do that, but somehow (very bad bug?) it no longer can: it always strips the formatting except once this morning.

What I am specifically looking for is how to keep the formatting when I have copied formatted text and be able to paste formatted text into the visual editor. Do you have a link that explains that?

Sadly I’m unable to recreate this bug. I’ve copied and pasted both links and formatted text into the visual editor, and all links and styles are being preserved. Could you try double-checking that you’re pasting into the “Visual” Tab and not the “Text” Tab?

I’m using a MacBook with OS X 10.9.4 and Firefox and Chrome browsers.

I carefully copied a passage with a link, pasted it into the visual (and definitely not the text) editor, using Cmd-V: all formatting was stripped. I verified that by looking at in the text editor after I had pasted it into the visual editor. The Paste as Text button was not depressed.

Now I’m trying it in Firefox. It works in Firefox! Hah.

    Firefox ver. 31.0
    Chrome Version 36.0.1985.125

I have a workaround now: I’ll switch to Chrome for browsing, Firefox for blogging.

Very strange, but thanks for persisting. I am relieved that I can at least do something. It’s been hard, using Chrome to edit, having to insert links by hand, one by one.

I’m marking problem cleared, but there is clearly something wrong with Chrome. I might have the developer version—not sure, and it doesn’t show up in About.
