format of homepage is goofed up

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m relatively new to WP, so I’m hoping for a bit of direction. I am using a free theme (Ocean Mist) everything was working fine until Friday, when I noticed the formatting on the home page was off. What I mean by this is the sidebar is all the way at the bottom, the white background that used to frame the text is gone and overall the page looks a bit wonky. When you click on a post it appears normal, the background restored and the sidebar in tact. I can’t figure out what I could have don’t to the homepage to have screwed it up, therefore I can’t figure out how to fix. Any suggestions would be welcome!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

This is either due to copying and pasting or it can also be a result of importing text containing invalid HTML.

Typically this is caused by an open HTML tag in one of your posts or in a text widget. You must locate it and close it.

Go to Settings > Writing and select “ ___ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then scroll down and click “Save Changes.”

Now, starting with your latest post, open it in the editor, make one minor change such as adding a space and then deleting it, and then click “Update Post.” Check your blog and see if it is back to normal.

If it’s not, then look for an open HTML tag and close it. Check your blog again and see if it is back to normal. If it’s still “messed up” then open the next post and do the same thing post by post until it goes back to normal.

If you have been copying and pasting text from elsewhere without using either icon 5 or icon 6 in Row 2 of the visual editor, please see here so you know how to do this correctly in the future. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text

ok, so I’m a neofite. How do I know if I have an open tag? I’m not sure what I’m looking for.
    Thanks in advance.

The simple answer is: you don’t have to worry about it if you follow these instructions TT gave you:

Go to Settings > Writing and select “ ___ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then scroll down and click “Save Changes.”

Now, starting with your latest post, open it in the editor, make one minor change such as adding a space and then deleting it, and then click “Update Post.” Check your blog and see if it is back to normal.

There are virtually no circumstances that this won’t fix. If this doesn’t fix it, come back and report and we’ll take another look. If you’re just curious, you can click away from the Visual editor on Edit Post to the HTML editor and read the raw code. You’ll see opening code tags and closing code tags with the slash / and an open tag is one with an opening tag in pointy brackets but no closing slash tag at all. Does that make sense?

It looks like it was a few posts back, I’m not sure I can resolve it, but I’ve removed the post while I try to figure that part out. I did follow the rest of the instructions and it’s back to working. Thank you both for your quick help. I let my business partner have access, and didn’t know what he did. We’ve agreed that from now on I’ll do all editing. ;)

I’m happy to hear you sorted this. You’re welcome. As I said above when you are copying and pasting text from elsewhere without using either icon 5 or icon 6 in Row 2 of the visual editor you will have problems. The correct method is here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text
    Happy blogging!
