Format of MX records is not working

I have been trying to enter new Custom DNS records. The MX records I was provided with from my domain registrar are: MX00.1and1.co.uk and
MX01.1and1.co.uk but when I type those in (I think in the correct format: MX 00 1and1.co.uk and MX 01 1and1.co.uk) I get this error report: 1. MX hosts must not appear more than once.

Can anyone help me out with how I should be typing in the new records?

Hi. See this document please for the proper way of entering an MX record.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/custom-dns/

As you can see, the mistake here is that you did not enter a priority number and replaced one of the dots with space.

Your domain name registrar should give you the records but also their priorities. 00 and 01 are not priorities, they’re part of the host name.

Maybe you can show your domain name registrar the link I gave you?

I showed them your link and they very unhelpfully replied this:

“Please be informed that we checked on the DNS settings of your domain name and we have seen that you have entered a wrong MX record. Please be advised that it should be mx00.1and1.co.uk and mx01.1and1.co.uk”

This was after speaking to someone in their support centre who said the priorities for both DNS records is ’10’ – does that seem right to you? I entered the records with the 10 inserted (after the MX) and they were accepted by wordpress (approx 50 hours ago) but I still can’t receive emails to my @domain account.

    Thank you!

    That is helpful :-)
Now we know what the priority numbers are. Do your records look like this?

    MX 10 MX00.1AND1.CO.UK.
    MX 10 MX01.1AND1.CO.UK.

If they don’t look like this, that explains why it’s not working.

wow you are helpful! okay I;ve inputted them as above – and I’ll let you know when/if it starts working. so many fingers crossed

I think I understand what you meant in your previous reply. It would have been helpful had 1and1’s customer service given you the MX records in that format right away, instead of just giving you the priority numbers.

    Keep us advised :-)
