Format question

When I post an article or whatever, I am given various options: standard, image, video, aside, quote, etc.
My question is this: is this purely for purposes of categorization, or does this choice accomplish anything else?

It has nothing to do with categories. The themes with post formats show posts in different ways for each format.

If a photo is posted under “Image” instead of “Standard,” what difference will it make in the presentation of the photo? I’ve tried it both ways, and I can’t see a difference. What am I missing? TIA.

Some themes are more “in your face” than others. Your theme is one of the more subtle presentations. You are not required to use post formats.

How the post formats are handled varies from theme to theme. As 1tess, mentioned some are more up front about it whereas others aren’t. A good example of this are the 2012 and 2013 theme. Huge, drastic change. 2012, had more of an emphasis on both subtlety and type whereas 2013 wanted to showcase post formats. :)
