Formatting

When I try to write a post the formatting is completely messed up and it is happening for every theme. I am typing directly into the editor. The first thing that happens is that the post has a huge gap at the top before the writing starts. So I mess around and add a few paragraphs. The next thing I know there is one paragraph at the top of the page and now there is a huge break until the next line of copy. I then hit the undo format button and get all the paragraphs together but now they are 4-5 inches down from the top again.
I’ve tried everything, using the html editor, paste with word and rich text. The same thing happens over and over. Can someone PLEASE PLEASE help. This shouldn’t be that hard. I have a series of pictures if you want to see what I am talking about. I didn’t post here because I don’t know what’s allowed and what isn’t. I don’t have time to look it up but if its ok I will post the links for the pictures.
Big Thanks to anyone who can help with this. I’ve never ever experienced anything like it and I’m about to throw in the whole WordPress idea all together.
