Formatting disappears…

  • Unknown's avatar

I am using Maywood Theme on wordpress.com. I create a number of hyperlinks and do some formatting, essentially spreading the wording of each link out to fit to 3 columns. I save, then view the page, but all the formatting is gone. It seems that wordpress is not seeing the formatting I did. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all for your time and patience.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there! Was this on your home page, or a different one? If you would be able to share the address of the page you’re working on, we can possibly help you check things over and figure out what’s happening with the formatting!

Hello and thanks so much for responding. If you go to the “January” page, you will see the links for each day of the month, with the wording spaced out under the column headings.

But even so, while you cannot see the edit page I am making changes to, there are differences. There are changes I am making that just aren’t reflected when I go to the “view” page and reload so I can see the changes. For example, if I make the column headings “bold”, I can see that change when I reload the “view” page. But when I spread the link wording out a little wider, that change does not seem to “get through” to the page when I go to view the changes.

  • Okay, I see the formatting, but I can see how it could be changing for you and looking a bit jumbled.

Since you’re laying this out like a table, have you considered using the table block instead? That may give you a neater result. Just type /table to get started, and choose three columns and some rows (you’ll be able to add more.) Want to give that a go?

Yes. Thank you. Where do I type /table?

  • Hey there,

    Many thanks for reaching out!

You would type table in the content area just like this. :)

    I hope this helps!

Unfortunately there is no “table” function, either with the theme I am using or at all in free themes (have to check). There is a “group” and “columns” setting, but I have so far been unable to get i to acknowledge the 3 columns I am using. As I said, the free themes are for me the only way to go right now, and I come up against the paid content quite a bit. But, blessed and thankful for the free versions and I will figure something out going forward. Thank you so much for the help. I appreciate your time and knowledge. Cheers.

  • Hi! The table block isn’t typically dependent on the theme you’re using as it’s more part of the editing/writing experience than the appearance settings of the site.

We have a guide to the Table block in case that can be useful for you!

Essentially, when you are working on one of these monthly pages, you can insert a Table block either by typing /table in a new paragraph, or by using the Add Block button (the + button) to open the choice of blocks, which then allows you to search for the Table block.

Thank you again for the help. But now, suddenly, wordpress.com website opens as a blank page with a “W” when I log in. If I open my main page without logging in it loads okay. Never had this happen before. I read that I should look at an error file, but if the page is blank when I try to log in, there’s no way to see the error file. Any ideas? Figure one thing out and another pops up. :(

Hi again. I found a way to log in so I can edit. I am finding that I cannot populate the /table rows and columns all at once by highlighting then copying and pasting. So I would have to add column item one at a time. This would add time sufficient to make the task longer instead of shorter. I thank everyone for their time and help. Cheers, all.
