Formatting goes awry after copying from Word/notepad

I type my posts in word first and have also tried notepad. Then when I am happy with it I paste it into a new blog entry. However, wordpress messes it up horribly. It looks OK immediately after pasting but when you publish it it does its own thing. It removes any paragraph breaks, instead just putting in about 3 spaces. Any place name it assumes it’s an address and puts it on its own line. If you look at the code it seems to randonly open and close font tags dozens and dozens of times, which is odd as the original post is in just one format, size etc. It even does it with notepad. Is there a way to turn off its infuriating editing as it takes me a good 1/2 hour to correct a post back to how it was when I pasted it.
    Thankyou in advance.

Word has, apparently, peculiarities with its HTML that make this sort of unavoidable. I would recommend writing in Wordpad (I haven’t noticed the spacing thing you mention in Notepad, though. Odd) or live in the text box on the blog, but I know that Blogdesk is very popular for an offline writing system, and it works smoothly with WordPress, even uploading pictures. It’s free to download, too, so google it and try it.

@rain has told you true. Word is awful so use BlogDesk or any other off-line editor. http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/09/why-not-to-use-word/

Here’s a thread where I prepared a list of all the urls for offline editors and posted it. http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=6601&replies=9#post-42777

Perhaps you and the visual text rich editor are not a perfect partnership. WordPress has two editors. I turned away from the dark side months ago and shut the visual rich text editor off => Dashboard => Users => Your Profile ( find the “Use the visual rich editor when writing check box” and uncheck it then click “update options”. :)

But to answer the question posed by the poster, it sounds like you’re using the rich text editor. WordPress has two installed editors. You can switch between them at Dashboard -> Users -> Your Profile -> The check box at the top of the page and click on Save Changes. The normal text editor only strips out the illegal HTMl codes. That should be the only changes that it makes to your text.

    Hope this helps,

It will also strip out the normal formatting, like bolding and so on, won’t it?

The strong and b tags are allowed. At least that’s what it says on the FAQ.

I use the regular editor. It has strong, italics and strike through.

I use the Notepad that came with Windows. I save everything now every two seconds just in case the power goes out again and I lose EVERYTHING again. Then I noticed that when I would put everything on WordPress, the formatting was all gone. So what I do now is click Save and then completely close Notepad and then open it up again and the formatting is back to the way I want it. I don’t know if this will help your situation though.

Thankyou very much for the replies. I will check out the blogdesk tool and turn off rich text editor.
Your swift responses and help are much appreciated.

If you’re cutting and pasting from Word, there is a special hidden option in the WordPress.com editor that fixes a lot of the problems (but not all).

Press Alt-V or Alt-Shift-V to access it.

    WordPress Tips – Alt-V

I typically have no problems cutting and pasting from Word (because I never do anything more than bold, italic or link in Word) but a friend of mine still has trouble when he uses margin settings, etc.

I use a Mac. None of the formatting that I do in Word for Mac transfer over when I cut and paste to WordPress. The same thing happens when I use TextEdit. And blogdesk appears to work only with Windows.

I tried turning the Rich Text Edit function on and off and neither setting makes any difference.

Any other suggestions? I suppose the obvious one is to write in WordPress and then copy the document to Word if I want to save it there.

    Thanks in advance.

Actually, that doesn’t work either. When I copy back to Word or TextEdit, all of the formatting that I did in WordPress is gone.

Doomed to double editing, I guess…

    :(

Forgive me if I’m not getting something, but why edit twice? Why not just type it in roughly in your offline system, then do the formatting on WordPress?

You’re right…except that I like to save the edited version of the document in Word as well in case I’d like to use the document for something else. So as long as I don’t mind keeping the “rough” copy in Word, all is well.

    Thanks for asking, though.
