It sounds like you are either in the HTML tab in the browser, or your user profile is set to NOT use the visual editor.

Look in the post editor, at the top right of the text window, does it have two tabs; one called visual and one called HTML? If it does, click on the “visual” tag and you should get the rich text editor tool bars.

If it does not have the visual tab in the editor, go to users > your profile, and at the top of that window, deselect “Disable the visual editor when writing” and then click “update profile.”

All those icons are there. http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/15/what-do-all-the-icons-mean/

But you might prefer to use Windows Live Writer. It’s almost identical to Word, but doesn’t cause such problems. And it’s free to download.

The one thing to remember, is Word is a word processor for print media, and as such has many more controls than the web. The web is actually quite limited, and although every year there is more and more capability added as far as text formatting, it is still a long way from a the capabilities of a word processor or page layout program.

You’re welcome, and Raincoaster’s suggestion about Windows Live Writer is a good one if you are on Windows. It is (I hate to say this of a Microsoft product) quite outstanding and I wish there was a version of it for Mac.

Windows Live Writer and WordPress are ideal together, don’t know how I’d cope without it ;-)
