Formatting Poetry
-
Sometimes I will print a poem as a post. Often the poem might have stanzas, or spaces. But when it comes to printing out on the post, it all prints as a single poem, no spaces, from start to finish. I press edit, go in and add spaces, but they simply disappear when it comes post time, and I’m left with this run-on poem. Am I doing something wrong? What can I do to fix it?

Poems, The Braided Noose and CactusFoot came out double-spaced though single-spaced in Word.
How can I return them to single space? -
Since Word is meant for print media, it does not speak “web” and the codes used in Word can actually break your blog, so the bulk of it is automatically stripped out.
You will always have to format poetry from within the editor. At the end of a line where you do not want a blank line in between that line and the next, hold down the shift key and hit return/enter. That will insert an HTML br tag. When you get to the end of a stanza and want a blank line between, just hit return normally.
If you are not getting double spacing between stanza, then it could be that the editor needs to be reset for “paragraph” spacing. Highlight all the stuff in the post in the editor, and from the “format” pulldown on the left end of the lower row of icons in the visual editor, select “paragraph” and normal paragraph formatting will be applied.

Word is great for print media, and sometimes for other sorts of communication (email), but it does not speak ‘web.’
Better to paste as plain text, then edit. Or use an off-line editor such as “live writer”
Generally, if you want single spaced lines on wp (with the visual editor), use “shift – return.” A simple return will give you a double spaced line.
Typing in the HTML editor, a simple return gives a single-spaced line, 2 returns result in double spaced lines.
But if you want more control of line spacing, then take a look at this article:
Formatting text pt. 3: space between lines, characters, and words

@sacredpath, tess ~ great tip that I didn’t know, re: “shift-return”.
I’d been making do by going into the html editor – anxious to try out my new trick. Thanks.
