Formatting problem: pics & text will not properly space. Help?!
-
I am editing a page on my blog and am getting frustrated with the editing tools.
It doesn’t seem to register that I am pressing the return key in between paragraphs. I will have the text laid out the way I want it to, then click update & preview. Then the text all gets jumbled together, as if I never pressed return.
This is starting to really get frustrating. I’m pasting my text from Word, if that makes a difference.
Help!
I went into the HTML pane and (with my limited knowledge of HTML) typed in
a few times, thinking that would help. NOPE.The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

This will explain how to do line breaks, and / or add space between paragraphs.

Thank you so much for your help! Question: the very first line of HTML code on your link says ANY CHARACTER HERE. What do I put there?
Also, my problem with the photos is the same as the text, I have them aligned left. They still “jump up” higher on the page, even though I’ve pressed return a bunch of times.
Thanks so much for your help!
-
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE means anything: a “!” or a letter or number…
Try this with your images:
In the visual editor: click image, click edit button (mountain icon), click Advanced Settings, type number in the “Vertical space” box, click Update, update post or page.
-
Neither of your suggestions are working! Nothing happens when I made these changes. So frustrating.
I’m starting to think this is a glitch in the system… is there a way I can notify support??
-
Your blog is private so I can’t take a look at it directly. Can you paste some of the code you are using here? Put the code between backticks. Usually the backtick ` is on the same key as the tilde ~
Is this a new problem? As if something has recently gone wrong?

5 px might not be giving you enough space to notice. I put 42 px for the top margin, and 12 for the bottom. I also added 10 px on the right so text doesn’t butt up too close to the picture. What sort of text are you actually using next to your picture? Paragraphs, as I’m showing? a list?

Thanks for your help, but the only thing that code did was move the photo to the right.
I find it unbelievable that I need to know HTML code just to move a photo or line of text down. There is definitely a glitch and I will contact support.
Thanks so much!

We can’t really help if we can’t see the post in question. If you cannot temporarily switch your privacy settings to the middle option, then at least tell us what you’re trying to do. Is it several images in one post? Text where in relation to the images? Also, what’s the theme you’re using?
-
OK I made the blog public so you should all be able to see it.
Go to the Services tab. scroll down. The photo of the rocks and the text titled “A La Carte Services” is where I’m having the problem.
No matter what I do, I cannot get the photo & text to move down.
I find it hard to believe that I need to know HTML to space this properly. This should be simple.
-
Also, when I try to move down the text that says “Individual Health Counseling Programs” it will not move down either.
Thanks
-
Yes, you DO need to know HTML code to control formatting that tightly here.
Can you be specific about what you’ve tried: please paste the exact code here, between backticks, so it displays properly. Backticks are those little marks usually on the same key as the ~.

Here ya go…

Wow, that’s a LOT of junk code: where are you getting it from? You’re not pasting from Word or something, are you? If so, no wonder you’re getting problems.
If I were you, I’d strip out ALL the HTML tags in the section you’re dealing with and just format it by hand from the start. You can expedite the process by copying the text in the Visual editor and then pasting it into the HTML editor; that strips out the code. Then follow the instructions above with regard to div tags and/or P tags and that’ll put in the spacing.
-
@jfanega: Try this for the last image+text:
<table border="0"> <tr> <td style="vertical-align:top;>IMAGE_CODE_HERE</td> <td style="vertical-align:top;>TEXT_HERE</td> </tr> </table>To increase the blank space before “Individual Health Counseling Programs”, paste this before it (in the html editor):
<div style="height:30px;visibility:hidden;">8</div>
(You can change the number to adjust the space.) -
Yes, I did paste from word. The reason is this: the default text for the blog is hideous. I am also copying & pasting from my current website.
I am still having a hard time believing that I have to know HTML to do this… why can’t they just have formatting tools like Word? Like I just choose font name, font size, spacing, etc etc??? Doesn’t make sense?
When I have time I will look into all of that code above, but to be honest it scrambles my brain :/
Thanks for your help!

Dont’ post from Word. It will continue to screw you up. If you want to use an offline system, use Windows Live Writer. It doesn’t do this.
You’ve SEEN what Word can do; screw up your blog. Why do you want WordPress.com to work like that?
