format/widget visibility issue
-
Hi. Format question. If someone goes to my blog by typing in the address, they see the entire page including my widgets on the right hand side. But if they click from a link that I post on Facebook, Twitter, etc when I put up a new post, NONE of that stuff shows up! How do I change that so that no matter how they link to my blog, they see everything including all of my widgets on the side?
thank you!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Howdy,
First, great site. My daughter has asthma and I probably spent longer than I should reading your site before responding here.
Each theme has it’s own settings (or lack thereof) for things like that and Twenty Eleven (your theme), doesn’t allow for sidebars on single post pages (where folks go see when coming in to directly read a post).
Have you tried Twenty Twelve? It is similar in many respects to Twenty Eleven but with more flexibilty (including widgets appear on each post’s page).
Thanks for blogging! Please let me know if you have any questions or need anything else. Cheers!

You are AWESOME for responding so quickly. All of ya’ll are! I so wish I had the time to spend in making this site really what I want it to be. I love that you are finding it helpful for your own interest and I really want to make it more appealing and easy to use but I just don’t have the time. For now, I’ll try Twenty Twelve. Does it allow me to have that same banner at the top WITH the byline as well? I find that when I try to switch to another format, all of that stuff gets messed up and doesn’t show correctly. If it does, then I’ll switch right away. Thank you!
-
And by “banner” I mean header — the one that says “Dear Asthma, I Win!” That’s the key to my site. :-) But I want my byline to show up as well. Thank you!!
-
Sure thing! You may need to re-add it via Appearance->Header, but it’ll work. I threw it up on my test site with Twenty Twelve on to confirm: https://cloudup.com/ciJ1zr8qewp
Cheers!

P.S. Could you just redesign my blog for me and let me know when it’s ready, please? hahahaha! :-)

I’ll get right on that ;-)
Please let me know if you have any other questions or need anything else! Keep blogging!

Thank you…..it looks so much better already! Even got fancy schmancy and added a background color. Whoa! :-)

Hi. One more question. Is it possible for me to change my blog address? When I originally started it the creative juices were not flowing! I should have named it “23seconds.” Is there any way to make that happen other than just paying for a new one, transferring everything over (which would take forever) and directing people to the new one? Or is there a way to do that and if people type in the old one or hit the old blog address from a link on a webpage it directs them to the new one? Thoughts?
Thank you!
-
Sure thing. With domain names, there are annual “leases” on them, so we can’t actually just rename your site from bringiton23.com to 23seconds.com.
You would need to buy a new domain in the Store->Domains page of your site, then set it as the Primary Domain on that page once the purchase/registration has gone through. You can have multiple domains on the site at the same time—no matter what anyone types in, the address in the address bar will change to the “primary domain” one.
Once that’s done, I’d make a post letting everyone know the address has changed, the old one will work for a little while but will stop working eventually.
Then, next year, when it comes time to renew bringiton23.com, you can let it expire and only use the new domain.
Does that make sense? Cheers!

Oh sweet! Okay, Thursday is payday so I will do it then. So all I do is buy a new domain, then go to bringiton23.com and change the primary domain to the new one? Then add a post at the top to let people know?
What about cached websites that have my current domain listed. Once my current one expires, and they click on it, will it reroute to the new one automatically?
So essentially the new slowly overtakes the old….? That would be awesome. I think this is a much more appropriate name. I don’t know if you read the entire Ironman Journey part of it but if you did, that will make sense to you. :-) Let me know if I’m on track with understanding that. You were just gonna redesign mine anyway, right? Ha! :)

:-)
Exactly. Google and other search engines will discover the change and anyone visiting the old domain will see the new automatically.
The only issue would be if someone tries to access your site via the old domain //after// the old one expires (currently set for july 2014), then it won’t redirect anymore. Some folks decide to keep the older domain longer if they have a long history with it or have business cards out in the field with the old domain, etc.
I haven’t checked if 23seconds.com is actually available or not (getting a good domain can be hard), so may want to think of something like it but along the same lines in case it isn’t available.
Talk soon :-)
-
Thank you so much! I am assuming that those who subscribe to my email will be rerouted also and don’t need to do anything. Sorry for the add-on question. That really is my last one on this subject, I promise. You are great!

Correct—e-mail subscriptions and folks who read via the WordPress.com reader won’t see any changes!
Feel free to throw anything else my way :-)
Cheers!

Sweet! thank you so much! I hope it’s available. I see that it’s only $13 so I may do it now. Wait. I still have to buy lunch for the next three days…haha!
-
Ah, if it is only charging $13, then that is for the mapping only (for if you bought domain somewhere else before). It should be $18 for a domain name if it is completely unregistered.
After typing in the address, if it just asks you to check a box, then it is asking you to confirm you already own it elsewhere. If it asks you to confirm your name, address, phone number, etc, and if you want to add on Private Registration for an extra $8/yr, then it is not registered anywhere.
Eating is good. Don’t stop that. :-)

Hmmm, okay. I’ll check it out tomorrow and let you know what it’s saying.
It’s time for food. I LOVE food. :-)
